I watched the reply a couple of times and I concur with your assessment of the play. I’m sure had the Leafs scored a similar goal and won the game, non Leaf fans would be calling it a cheesy goal aided by the referees.

The question of captaincy is an interesting one. No question Matthews is ready and it’s up to Tavares to pass the torch.
When I later rewatched the play I also understood JW's point better.

It wasn't the 63 guy who picked up the puck, it was that after Chychrun made the play on Matthews, Chychrun then carried on and subsequently scored the goal. Matthews didn't stay with him.

If the referee had called the obvious holding infraction that sprung the Coyotes on a 2 0n 1 the play would have been whistled dead...

Leafs should have, could have won the game before OT and avoided all this navel glazing,

But he didn't. So players are supposed to play on. Same in every sport. Game play is live until you hear the whistle.

Clearly.

But a separate point is that in spite of the non-call, if Matthews stays with Chychrun, it also prevents the goal.

With the way Mrazek played (I think that he's starting again tonight) Leafs were fortunate to get the single point.

This is amazing.
We've never had a player of Matthews's calibre in this city for the Leafs, EVER.
Since Game 1 he has played almost flawless hockey, giving it 100% every game at both ends of the ice,
improving every single year.
Wins the scoring title, going for a repeat, top 10 in points, now top 5 going for the title, all the while backchecking his balls off,
taking all the important faceoffs.
And this is the heat he gets for a border line play....what a fucking joke.

Maybe Nylander should sit him down and give him a lecture on work ethic and commitment.

I guess he should have flopped to the ice to sell it...
No, he should have sucked it up, stayed with his man on the back check, and prevented Chychrun from scoring.

Being a great player doesn't mean you don't fuck up sometimes. This time, he fucked up. He should own it, as should all his apologists. Pretending he didn't fuck up is a simply a bad look.

The reason they lost was the 8-ball Mrazek put them behind and then the blown non-call in overtime...Matthews was behind the play after the non-call and wither he sauntered back or not he wouldn't have caught up and the Coyotes still would have converted the 2 on 1 and scored...
And don't forget the other non-call when Tavares got mugged about a minute before the non-interference call on Matthews. Reffing in the NHL against the Leafs is horrible. How can a player like Matthews draw only 7(!?!??) this season? He gets interfered and hooked all the time. That whole game was a joke. It's like they wanted to call a "clean" game by ignoring all the penalties.

Matthews 2 game pay forfeiture is only $116K?
🤔

Wish I had the same accountant.

Wait until the playoffs.
Hats off to Dubas for letting his top players fend for themselves, but hey, he so much more progressive than the rest of us,
Dubas knows best.

not always sure...

A first time offender loses one "day" of pay per game suspended: say over a 7 month season they "work" 200 days.
So Matthews would lose $11,640,250 / 200 days = $58,201 per day x 2 days = $116,402 or whatever they said.

A repeat offender loses a "game" of pay for each game suspended, so his total salary divided by 82 (games per season) rather than the 200 days per season.... that's a lot more money for a second suspension.

Hey, I think Dubas is doing alright. He's made some mistakes, and has hit some home runs. I don't know how it's his fault the refs ignore penalties against Leafs players. I also don't know how having a goon would fix anything.

It's not about having goons, its not an either or. Its about having quality players who play a regular shift up in the lineup, that can throw their weight around a little bit, especially so Tavares and Matthews don't have to do what it takes to discourage guys from taking advantage. Some decent power forwards with a little nastiness, or a couple tough D men.
Don't you recognize the same patterns at this time of the year for the last six years?

Forget about it now, you're not going to find those players and if you do you'll pay through the nose, if you can fit them into the cap at all. Every other contender has these players, we don't.
Dubas will not adjust. Good luck waiting for the refs to protect you
Like I said, wait until the playoffs.

He’s not a goon...but...Wayne Simmonds is one of the toughest players around, he’s got every teammates back and will fight anybody.
