Marleau is a better choice than Stamkos who is always hurt and suffers from blood clots. Sorry to be so blunt about Stamkos.
With Stamkos health issues combined with how fast Matthews has progressed, I think Leaf management are high fiving themselves that Stamkos decided to stay in Tampa. It would have been nice to have Stamkos here but eventually Leaf fans would have realized it was a bad signing. I hope Stamkos does well to a point since I am a Leaf fan.

This is unlikely to happen.
I'm pretty sure Patrick Marleau is interested in collecting the $4.25M due him in Year 3.
If he isn't, Mrs. Marleau probably is, in which case Patrick probably won't retire until his contract is complete.
Not sure what the rules are, but could he retire after getting the 3m signing bonus on July 1st. That would only leave 1.3million hanging. What are the conditions to that signing bonus if any?

I'm not sure on that.

My guess is that if he retired, he'd have to pay the bonus back, as it was part of his contract to play the year 3 season.
If however, he's injured, and goes on LTIR, he'd get paid his full Year 3 salary, and bonus.

Somewhat good news for the Leafs. McDavid extension for 8 years at $12.5 million/year. Better than the $13 million plus that was initially reported.

No.
It would shrink available space by however much each signs for.
If you click the link, it will show you each player's status.
**My guess on salaries would be $2M (Brown) & $1.4M (Hyman).

**If they sign 1 year deals.
Well, I don't think any of the resident Terb experts would have predicted this...

The Maple Leafs sign Zach Hyman to a 4 year contract worth $9,000,000 total, $2.25M A.A.V.

Apparently McDavid left money on the table and could have gotten more, but he decided to help out the team and not raise the stakes. We'll see if Matthews is going to take one for the team or simply demand top dollar.

He left a maximum of $1.5MM/yr on the table. Not an insignificant amount, but let's not make him out to be a patron Saint.

I know at least one that didn't think so. Lol

I will not be surprised if Brown gets 3m+. The fact that he's still not signed could mean that he's being shopped as part of a package for a d man.

I think the Leafs are more interested dealing JVR over Brown but Brown will be attractive due to his age.

What do you think, Nylander will get around $7.25 million for 8 years.

Note, my estimate was based on it being a 1 year deal.
The Maple Leafs bought out 2 U.F.A. seasons with the 4 year contract, as a result, the higher A.A.V.

That sounds good to lock Nylander up for 8 years. The Leafs are now like "half pregnant", they have the offence and goaltending to seriously compete, but a defense crop at best 'average' in the conference. It doesn't make sense to me if they signed Marleau and not upgrade the defense. It'll be costly for sure but the Leafs have an abundance of young forwards + JVR to dangle for defense upgrade.

Either Hyman or Brown with JVR may get them a decent defenceman (I would hate to see Brown go though). The Leafs have too many NHL ready forwards right now.

Matthews, Nylander, Marleau
Bozak, Marner, JVR
Kadri, Komarov, Brown
Moore, Martin, Soshnikov/Kapanen

Where to play Hyman if Brown and JVR are still here? Possible 4th line ahead of Martin or Soshnikov or Kapanen.

Should be interesting to see what the Leafs will do next.

Interesting that both Price and McDavid chose to take a very large portion of their contracts as bonus money, meaning they will get paid even if there is a lockout after the 2019/20 season as many analysts are expecting, or so I'm reading.

He's only had one full NHL season.
So did McDavid

Nylander also won gold at the 2017 World Championship and was named tournament MVP.

If Marleau can just even retain the same level of play like last year, you can play him on any of the three top lines and he'll be instant upgrade regardless which winger he replaces. The power play should improve also. That's the beauty of having a skilled veteran like him. Hope someday when he retires he'll be remembered as one in the same class of Howe, Selanne and Jagr who played with top end skills well into their 40's.

That should be the sticking point for both sides. If they wait till next year to do a deal, Nylander's performance next season could mean more money for him or savings for the Leafs. Some compromising is needed to get a deal done now.

Draisaitl's contract if done before Nylander's extension will go a long way in determining what the Leafs will have to pay Nylander. Another contract that will help to determine Nylander's salary is Gaudreau's contract. Nylander has more upside than Gaudreau, IMO, so he should make more than $6.75 million/year. If Draisaitl gets $8 to $9 million/year, Nylander's camp will probably be asking for about the same. If Nylander's contract extension is done this year, it will go a long way in determining what the Leafs will be facing after next season with Matthews and Marner. If the Leafs make it farther in the playoffs and Matthews and Marner have similar or better years than in their rookie seasons, the comings contracts for the three of them will be in the $28 to $30 million dollar range. If the cap does not increase to approx $80 million, there is no way the Leafs will be able to keep all three.
