Sign Matthews to an extension before he reaches UFA should be priority #1. Remove him from the line-up after next year and this team looks real bad.

Move one big salary to improve team structure (have better balance) by acquiring 1 good defenceman and better supporting players.

No team with a player with a cap hit over $10 million has ever won cup and the Leafs have 3

It's crazy the Leafs do not need much change.

Last year they brought in Galchenyuk just before the series. Big mistake has he made 2 turnover that lead to Habs critical goals. Had they brought in Corey Perry instead!

This year the Leafs just ran a bit out of luck. They should have won I think. A few more better bounces and less strange calls by the refs and they would have won.

Next year! Same group.

What do they say about doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result?

Give them a break, they have only been doing it for 54 years. Chicago Cubs went 71.

They cant really make any changes with the big 4 still there , They will have salary cap problems as long as they are they. All they can afford is minium salary players.

Speeza (should be Spezza) said he will only play for Toronto.

He was in a way acting like an assistant captain, captain and/or coach during the playoffs and he is officially neither of those.

Imho, there's no reason to keep Campbell.

Let the young goalies get their chance, Kallgren, Woll and Petruzelli. The Leafs have had hard luck, maybe - just maybe - one of them is better than Campbell.

Who's Dryden McKay?

the biggest mistake Toronto made was signing Tavares.

Don't get me wrong he's quite good. But he takes way too much spaces on salary cap.

Leafs could have got a few more great key player avoiding that sign up.

The fact that they only bought one of his free agency years and yet still gave him 12 million dollars a year in that first extension was absurd — after all 2 of those 5 years were bridge years that are typically a bit cheaper salary wise.

Just terrible negotiating by Dubas. You tell him he either takes more than 5 years or he is getting no more than 10 million. You don’t give a deal that allows him to hit the market early and get an amount similar to McDavid at 8 years.

Marner and Tavares are good players but one is a tad overpaid and the other is very overpaid. Hard to trade them for fair value on the ice because of those cap hits. Obviously you keep Matthews — so if you tweak your cap reliance on forwards, it seems like Nylander is the odd man out since he has a fair contract that is more easily movable.

Or you keep them all.

Here's the thing. Apparently, Tavares (UFA) was offered more money by another team(s) but wanted to play for Toronto. Marner, on the other hand was an RFA and is paid UFA money. Another mistake was letting Lou go.

My guess is Matthews ends up signing with the LA Kings, San Jose or Boston. Anywhere but Toronto. lol
