I mostly stream from YT lately although my vinyl and CD collection is extensive.

Joshua Bell recently replaced sometime TSO conductor Iona Brown as music director of the Academy. Thanks for the recommendation Ponderling, get well soon.

I have been sick with a cold and my ears consequently feel like stuffed with cotton from the nasal congestion.
Plus my sleep schedule is messed as a side effect. So I have not been in the mood for music.
I will get back to listening and posting soon
Get well soon mate. Last of the Ace until the new one arrives :).

Last night my ears had popped back to normal after a few days of congestion.
And I had an almost normal sleep the night before.
So on the turntable I listened to:

Chopin: Les Sulphides- an 1830's piece for all female company ballet. Tells the story of how a spirit soared into the life of a mortal and became involved in human passions.

The above description almost reminds me of how some wax on about specific dancers in the stripe club review section of this board.

The second side is Strauss Jr: Graduation Ball. A 1940 ballet that was premiered first in Australia, before opening in USA.
So that nugget made it interesting, as to the time it was being created.

By Boston Pops, Arthur Fiedler: LP, mono 1955

Gorgeous Anastasia Huptmann plays Chopin's most epic Polonaise. Chopin was a ladies man, doesn't surprise me he wrote an all female ballet, I've never heard it.

Currently spinning: Holst: The Planets
Vienna Philharmonic, Herbert Von Karajan conductor. LP. 1981 pressing of 1962 recording.

There is now a lot more to listen to in my LP backlog. .

I visited my 93yo mom today at her LTCH in Newmarket, and she is definitely loosing her marbles.
She visually recognizes me.
Asks how my wife is, then next breath: How is her husband?
With no recognition that the minute prior we spoke of how I am, ala my wife's husband.

She says she hasn't seen Mom in a while, meaning her mom.
Wonders where she could be.
Who passed away in 1981.

So after graciously exiting that visit,
to try to add something positive to the 180km round trip it is,
I came down Yonge for quite a bit instead of the 400 fiirst thing on the way back.

I hit 5 thrift stores and bought about 35 more good shape older LP's all summing up to under $100.
Then I decided that was enough for a day,.
So I rejoined the 400SB at Steeles.
And had a pretty uncongested trip home from there.

Ok, next one -
Eileen Farrell, American soprano, sings Puccini's Arias.
Supported by Columbia Symphony - conductor Max Rudolf. LP
Estimate it came out in mid to late 1960's.
Columbia Records released it, but a number of the recordings are credited to BMI, so those must have been recorded in British or European halls

Man, does that lady ever have fantastic pipes!
I don't care that I don't understand Italian, it still sounds great.

And now, a different spin.

Switched on Bach- Walter Carlos, assisted by Ban Folkman, playing on the early Moog synthesizer. LP 1968
On of the largest selling classical music albums of its time.
It shows the true first wave vision of what electronic music could imagine to become.

I also bought Switched on Bach II, but will sample it later.

Now a golden oldie:
Original Broadway Cast Recording: Peter Pan, LP mono 1954.
Starring Mary Martin.

This one is pretty dirty i.e. noisy with light spots of mouldish no sheen at spots.
But she has a great voice, and nice melodic older style Broadway tunes
Composers are a mixed bag on this show, by Jules Styne, and Comden&Green, as well as Charlap, a relative unknown.
A clean up is warranted.

I will give it a full 'spa' experience overnight, to cleans up well

Lay on a flat surface, lightly mist with distilled water to soften up the dirt bit.
Wait 10 minutes.
Then apply a bead of PVA wood glue on the surface, and spread evenly with the edge of a piece of cardboard.
Take care to keep glue clear of the center label.
Leave to dry overnight.

It will be clear once dry.
Peel off and the gunk deep in the grooves comes up with the glue.

Listen, and if it sounds materially better, repeat on flip side.

So the mould sounded really bad on the inner tracks.

So discwasher brush clean the record of any bits dug up playing so far.
Wipe off kitchen counter well.
Mix a tiny drop of ultra dish detergent with small bowl of water from a r/o drinking water tap I have on the edge of the sink.

Use a soft brush on a little 2 aaa cell electric tooth brush.
Wet brush and move in direction of grooves. It will foam a tiny bit.

Once whole surface done, hold at an angle and rinse well under r/o water tap.

Shake well holding vertically.
Use an old velvet record brush to even out any remaining water, and squeegee it to the outer edge so it drips off the record.
Wait 5 minutes.

Now it plays amazingly better.
Still the occasional click and pop, but miles better to listen to.

So on a big roll today. Wife off at rehearsal all afternoon, so living room TV off, and that stereo is all mine to drive.
Overcast, watching squirrels and birds out later that usual.
Since the early am here started with a rater light ice coating on everything

The album I picked up is strange.
I grabbed it mostly to a have as a resource if I end up doing sound design for some sort of royal play.

Elizabethan Music - The Julian Bream Consort. LP.
I guess some sort of recording made in 1960's but I had re-released pressing from the 1980's

Music all popular creations from era 1550 to 1630, played using Bass Viola, Pandora, Cittern, Lutes, Violin and Flute, and some Baritone Male Vocals.
I am not even sure what some of these instruments are, but the sounds are nice.

I liked it a lot. It is always interesting to hear what folks of the past found aurally pleasing.
Than goodness for written music notation for these composures so they could be re-created.

Next old music sampler:

Overtures ...In Spades
New Symphony Orchestra of London Raymond Agoult. LP 1957

6 pieces of music for romantic musical/dramatic productions, composed 1830-1869.
Three from Paris, three from Vienna.

Neat sampling of Overtures:
What lets the theatre attenders know the get to their seats
Set the moon of stage for the play before the front curtain opened
and warm up the crowd with bits of music that they would hear more of later during the play.

I don't know why I buy these old records
But in a thrift store they are about $3 each.
Fun to see what you might find going there.

And cheaper that buying a coffee at Starbucks.
And when you drink it, it is gone, where as with a record, if you like it you can listen to it many times.

And I own it.
I am not paying a subscription fee every month to access stuff I do not actually own.
