It's been awhile since we had a Lost thread so..
The show is apparently winding down - theories on what the frack is going on? I only have one question - will we ever find out the name of the MIB?
I must admit I didn't see the explanation for Adam and Eve coming before mid way through tonight's episode.

Yeah, I was wondering about that.....but in this case, it was just eve.....there was no adam.

I also found it to be a little cheesy to continually call the one by name (jacob) and not the other.....kind of lame actually.

So, now the island is the source of life on earth? Doesn't really explain the two timelines though.

I'm sure we're going to get a "sopranos" type ending that won't explain a damn thing.......

As soon as Allison Janney's character showed up at the cave with Jacob's Mom, I figured the "adam and eve" mystery would be solved.

I also thought we would get MIB/ Flocke/ Smokey's name, but no go... **rolls eyes**

The 2 timelines are necessary to show the viewer what happens after Jack makes it all right in the end. I think it is a foregone conclusion that he is the candidate to be the new Jacob... There will be some sort of cataclysmic event to "blow up" the island thereby "sinking" it to the ocean floor (member that scene in the season opener...) that restores flight 815, and renders the alternate reality as the new reality continuing in 2004...

Somehow the Desmond, Jack, Flocke, Hugo and Widmore are all key elements of what this cataclysmic event will be and how it will transpire.

I guess you haven't been watching, but that 'cataclysmic' event occurred at the end of last season when they blew up the island with 'Jughead'. Remember when Juliette told Sawyer "It worked" just before dying? That's what she meant. She had already seen the alternate reality & that the nuclear bomb did indeed blow up & sink the island.

As for Smokey's name, i don't think it's important anymore. Now knowing that he & his adoptive mother are 'Adam & Eve', it's obvious that since his death, he's taken on various identities throughout the centuries. Christian Shepherd, John Locke, etc. All dead people. I wonder if he also wasn't Walt, who's clearly not dead? Maybe he was the dog, who never seemed to die & kept on disappearing? Loved last night's episode!

I also agree that Jack Shepherd is likely 'The Candidate'. His story is also similar to Jacob's (father/mother approval issues, etc). Someone full of guilt who finally found a way to be at peace with himself & who will learn to accept his destiny.

I still have a lot of unanswered questions, though. Will Aaron (Claire's kid) ever be part of the mystery? Until he was born, no one had ever been born on the island since Rousseau gave birth.

Yes... I have been watching, but this is LOST we are talking about here so standard thinking does not apply! LOL

So what you are suggesting is that what we have come to know as the "Alternate reality" is in fact the "true reality" and the "on island" scene's are the real alternate reality?

(Confused yet? LOL)

I'm also guessing that Allison Janney's character is some sort of smoke monster too... how else could she kill all those people and fill in the wells etc in just one night.

Anyone recognize the knife MIB had?

Something like that. What we believe to be the 'sideways' or 'alternate reality' segment is actually reality. It's all a guess, of course. Maybe what we're seeing now on the island is some kind of purgatory where the characters have to redeem themselves in order to make their destiny/reality just ONE. Which is why some of the characters in the alternate reality segments (or what we are led to believe it is) are starting to have flashbacks, while others are not. Maybe those that don't haven't redeemed themselves...yet. I wouldn't be surprised to find out if sideways John Locke is actually smokie. Maybe that's why he chuckled when he fell out of his wheelchair in the sideways segment dedicated to him. I don't think so, but who knows.

I think Allison Janney's character was the original smokie. Which is why she knew that the children should not go into the light. She didn't want them to become what she had become. I'm still perplexed on why she told them that they were now immortal, but maybe we'll later find out why. And yes, that was the same dagger that killed Jacob & Drogen. That's the dagger to be used to kill the supposed 'immortals' (although i think Drogen was mortal). My guess is that Jack Shepherd will eventually kill fake Locke with the knife....or get someone to do it if he's not allowed to (the rules). If indeed Jack's the one to replace Jacob, that is. Maybe we're being misled into thinking that Jack is THE one. Maybe Desmond? What's with the Desmond storyline anyways? Why is Kate's name crossed out on the list? Is Juliette sidways Jack's wife? My guess is that she is. Whatever happened to Bernard & his wife after Jughead blew up? Are they still somewhere on the island? My guess is that they had accepted their fate & didn't have to still be around....they moved onto their alternate reality life immediately.

By the way, i felt sorry for MIB/Smokey last night once i found out more about him. I never thought i'd say this, but i now find him more sympathetic than Jacob. All he wants is to go back to his roots....find out what's on the other side for himself. Which is what he's wanted all along. I still find it odd that we haven't been told his name yet. Are the writers playing with our heads or is there a good reason for it?

My gut-feeling tells me that John Locke was initially supposed to be 'the one' to replace Jacob. Which is why he was followed/spied on for the most part of his life, ever since he was born. Even Richard Alpert was there at his birth & later met with him as a child. Why did Ben really kill him? Out of jealousy? As his way to get back on the island (likely)? Did Ben foil destiny by killing Locke? Was Jack Shepherd a 2nd option all along? We may find out in less than two weeks.....we may.

Pretty much agree with everything you say... And yes... Desmond is key to the whole thing- he seems to be cognizant of elements of both realities...

Another point about the knife... when MIB used it to kill his "mother", he did so before she spoke- apparently one of the rules when attempting to kill one of the so called immortals... which is why it worked, and possibly how Jacob and MIB figure THAT particular rule out. (?) She also said "Thank you..." to MIB... leading me to believe she suffered from a fate worse than death, and was now finally free from it. (Why else would an adoptive mother thank her adoptive son for killing her... god knows how long she's been stuck there, and quite possibly SHE was the equivalent to MIB's character for centuries...)

(I know... I spend WAY TOO MUCH time on this farkin show tryin to figure it out! **rolls eyes**)

As for the mom being the original smokie, and MIB being able to kill her before she spoke, that doesn't fly because the rule isn't "before they speak each time", it is only upon first meeting. For eg: you can't have locke/Smokie talk to you today, then tomorrow you sneak up on him and stab him. I think it a recent episode someone mentioned that they needed someone smokie hadn't talked to yet.....

I am going with my gut on this one: we aren't going to find out squat and will be left with just as many questions as answers. I think the writers will leave the story open ended to make room for a spin off.

Maybe:

Lost in the desert: Jack and Kate buy a sport truckster and attempt to drive to Las Vegas and crash
Lost in a mall: they find an alternate reality in West Edomonton Mall
Really Lost: A plane load of people fly through an electrical storm and are stranded at a vacant airport terminal. Each week there is a whole new cast with no reference to the previous cast members.

I will say this again, (about all the questions not being answered). I don't really care any longer. I think the writers went way overboard in their mixed up plotlines. I read a book on writing techniques and one of the biggest no-nos in writing is when a writer does something that brings the reader out of the story. The writers of lost did this years ago. We no longer are wrapped up in what is happening, we're spending more time trying to figure out what IS happening and what it is supposed to mean.

Think of it as a murder mystery. A good movie makes you care about the characters, and become engrossed in the story. Last night is a great example: I didn't really give a shit that jacob really didn't want to be "the guardian", I was more interested in what questions it was trying to answer.

I find that with every episode, for every answer the writers give, they create just more. For example: sure, they explained how Jacob and smokie got on the island, but it created yet another question as to who their "island mother" is (at least IMO).

IMO the ONLY question that was (semi) answered last night was: the light is the source of all light (aka life) on earth. If it goes out, light goes out everywhere.

Well, if they're only going to answer one question per episode, they aint' gonna answer anymore because there's only 1 episode left before the finale.

Oops! You have a point... my bad... but I do think she is some kinda "smokey" though... how else could a woman kill all the villagers and fill in all the wells though.

They did answer the question as to who Adam and Eve were though...

A possible foreshadow as to your "we aren't going to find out squat and will be left with just as many questions as answers" point though- in last nights episode, island mother said to Jacob/ MIB's birth mom: "stop asking questions, because with each answer comes a new question". LOL!

I think the only people more lost than the people on the show are the people watching the show!

"stop asking questions, because with each answer comes a new question", that's fine, writing a storyline that one can't easily figure out or is predictable is great. I hate formula movies or series where you can see the next step miles ahead of time. But it is also really easy to make something so convoluted as to not being entertaining any longer.

IMO the MOST "entertaining" aspect of Lost in the last 2 or 3 yrs is the alternate universe/timeline. Frankly, smokie wanting off the island, and what he goes through to try, is YAWN boring. You know, it's like, the third episode and yet there are so many other new questions: Desmond and his ability to withstand a huge EMF. He's still in one of the wells I might add.

I mean, smokie and the bomb on the sub. What did that give us? Jin and Sun dead and the fact that they can't trust him. BFD. I could have told you that the second he appeared. They killed off a couple of "prospects". BFD, with the alternate universe anyone dying means shit.

I think what they're trying to do is get us interested in who will be the new protector of the island. Who gives a shit? That's a plotline that is only recent. It doesn't make sense because if that is the "moral of the story", that is only the moral of THIS season, are they saying that everything up to this point was basically meaningless?

Are they dragging their ass as to what the island actually IS? Who gives a shit, because it isn't the point of this season.

Like smokie making the wheel into the light. We saw that last year when locke moved the island (or was it ben, who gives a shit). Ok so smokie planned on doing it years before. BFD. It wasn't a way off the island then, and it isn't now. It's just a way to move the island. Totally useless.

just a little spoiler?

I could be wrong but if time resets and kicks into the alternative timeline, whoever is in that timeline can't be the island protector since there is no "jacob" in the alternative timeline......so, that means that no one from flight 815 will be the protector......

You hit the nail on the head Guy: how would clothing survive? It's the island. Least that's the excuse the writers will ALWAYS use to explain holes in the plot. That's the cop out I was referring to earlier.

Another hole in the plotline? The ship from last season with the helicopter. If the only way to get on or off the island was with the sub, (for years I might add), who in their right mind would go to the expense of building and using a SUBMARINE when you could do SO much more with a freighter and a freight helicopter?

Oh, it's the island.

Sorry, the writers who think they're so "cool" and "creative" are just fools. Anyone can write a convoluted plot full of holes, with all kinds of tricks, dead ends etc. I seriously think they write any idea that comes to mind on 4 x 6 cards, stack them up, and then toss the lot in the air and whatever lands face up on the floor, they make an episode on it.

I love lost and listen to hours of podcast after every show and so I am one of those Lost addicts but I must say last night like many nights this season ie bored me ... I often think the minds of the watchers of the show are more creative then the writers at this point ... There reveal that adam and Eve was a joke and kind of proves they are making it up as they go along ... Jack and kate who discovered them noticed cloths on them and those bodies would be over 200 years old and so how would
clothing exist ...
Ummm... I think you meant 2000 yrs old... I read somewhere that last night's episode was apparently set in 23 AD...

Jack did say originally when they found "Adam & Eve", that they been there for at least 50 yrs... so maybe the island's special qualities caused them to decay at an extremely slow rate...

(Or... like tboy says- they're makin shit up as they go... LOL)

CG: I don't know that man had ocean going vessels in 23 AD did they?
In 4000 B.C. in Egypt, they made long narrow boats powered by many oarsmen. In the next 1,000 years, Egyptians started using cotton-made sails to help their boats go faster and with less work. Then they made ships large enough to cross the oceans. These ships had sails and oarsmen, and they used them for travel and trade.

In 1200 B.C. the Phoenicians and Greeks were the most seafaring people along the Mediterranean. They made very big cargo ships and also improved the ship rig a lot. By 500 B.C., they built ships with two big masts. One was a middle mast with a square sail, and the other sail was triangular, and it supported the main sail. These ships were about 100 feet long and could carry 100-200 tons (90-180 metric tons).

We're coming up to the 100 B.C.'s. Roman ships became the rulers of the Mediterranean. The Romans built the largest merchant ships of their time; they were 180 feet long and 45 feet wide. They could hold 1,000 people and carry 1,000 tons. Roman ships carried people because no other boat was designed to just carry passengers. The only problem with them carrying people was that the passengers had little shelter in the night. That was because the lower level was usually packed with merchants or trade.

Now we are going to the late 1000's. That's when the Vikings took their place in the oceans. Vikings rode on their famous long ships. They were about 80 feet long and 17 feet wide. Most of these ships had 20 oars on each side, some even had 30! They were mainly used for raiding other countries, but they were also for trading and colonizing. They usually had big weaponry in the bottom.
