Where was Rita McNeil?
Probably hitting the buffet table !

The London acts far outweighed anyone else. As far as the Barrie acts :

Tom Cochrane - his voice was shot

Dan Acykroyd - put on some beef !

Tom Green - big mouth / no talent

Tragically Hip - what kind of drugs is Gord Downey on ???

Celine Dion from Vegas - please, u know that was going to get booed

Deep Purple / Jet / Bryan Adams - all did solid jobs on getting the crowd going

missed Neil Young perhaps that was a good thing

Young put on a decent performance, and closed the show with a mob rendition of Keep On Rockin in the Free World. Alas, it was pretty clear that the ending of the song hadn't been rehearsed, because some of the musicians were working on opposite chords. Only the drummer was able to stop the train wreck and bring the thing to a conclusion.

Canadians missed a couple dozen top international acts due to CTV focussing on Barrie performances. They allowed us a single miserly song from top bands like Pink Floyd, The Who etc. just so we'd get the maximum CanCon snooze from Our Lady Peace or Tom Cochrane. I thought this was supposed to be an international show?

Kept getting dragged back the TV all day yesterday to see who was going to be playing next. Found myself moved at unexpected times and in unexpected places.

After it was over, I couldn't help think about posts I'd read on various boards on the lead up to the event, specifically the angry posts about how this is all to boost record sales, or Bob Geldof is a no talent bum and Bono is a loudmouth and what right to rock stars have to spout off about anything, etc, etc...

All that may be true but I think mass events like this do more good than bad in that they allow us to think about our potential for goodness, we may not act on it, but at least it forces us to consider what we could/should do to make the world a little better.

Even if one rejects the approach taken by the Live 8 organizers one can top up their charitable donations to causes they believe in. Sure Bob Geldolf may be an egotistical bastard -- from interviews I've read over the years he'd be the first to admit it -- but I do believe that, on this issue, his heart is in the right place as it that of all of the performers who played the event.

People have been throwing money at the children starving in Africa issue forever, and if anything, the populations have increased and situation has gotten worse. Forgiving debt sounds great, but what can be done to end this cycle? I don't think there is anything that can be done from the outside.
I had been thinking along same lines, and am glad someone else was willing to be non-PC enough to pose this question. I mean, really, what is the deal with Africa? Where is the progress?

As far as Live 8 goes, I just couldn't muster up too much interest. I was pretty riveted by Live Aid back in 1985, but this just feels too much like, "Oh, we're doing this again?" I'm sure there were some great acts and some great performances, but I just didn't really care enough to pay attention.

I was underwhelmed at the technical aspects of the Barrie show which were really obvious compared to London and other venues. Microphones cut out or were too low. Camerawork was merely adequate compared to other sites. The London show had impressive looking visuals playing on the video screens behind the artists. I didn't see any of that from Barrie. I'm no Celine Dion fan but anyone that boos someone's appearance at a charity event should be shot. The concert highlights from the various shows that were shown after Barrie wrapped up really put the Canadian production to shame. The ending of the Barrie show was poorly done - not thought out at all. It's unfortunate because a lot of people put a great deal of time & effort into the concert.

Would agree, was starting to think that people around the world watching the Canadian show would feel they have to start sending us money. The London show was impressive.

Jann Arden was good, and the Barenaked Ladies were fun to watch and did the job pushing the cause.

Barrie

Deep Purple - Gillan was obviously straining at times to hit the high notes he used to be famous for. ho-hum performance by the band overall. might be time to pack it in, guys?

Neil Young - I liked his rendition of Four Strong Winds - was that his wife singing with him?

Finale - appropriate politically charged rocker, Rockin in the Free World, to close the event, but embarrassing meltdown at the end, as previously noted

amateurish looking production compared to Philly and London, and not many people appeared to show up. The place looked deserted like five minutes after the finale

London

OK, everybody now, Naah nah nah na na na naah, hey jude........ why does McCartney feeled compelled to trot this out every chance he gets (think Superbowl) - overplayed!

Having your own satellite dish... and I'm not talking about ExpressVu, DTV, or Dishnet, but a real dish with motor and Ku Band LNB you could have been watching the feeds live from Europe on.

AMC 9 @ 83 degrees west has 4 direct live feeds for Hyde Park, Rome, Berlin, and Paris.
11758(H) 24,500 SR

This is the feed that CTV was picking up for rebroadcast through there master control... watching the Hyde Park feeds was the best! And NO damn CTV commercials.... just the raw feed with very high quality video!!! There even was a HD feed… I just didn’t have a decoder for the HD side.. but even in SD it looked incredible
Nicely Done. I'd love to have a KU dish.

I'm guessing a DVD will be out soon for this one. I'd like to see all of the London gig. Thought Madonna was amazing. Two of the best pop/dance songs,(LAP & ROL) ever. Still brings it.
Floyd could have been session men.
They should have wheeled out 'Feed The World' as the finale, though I understand the Winding Road reference.
No one does Charity Gigs like the Brits.

On The Barrie front: BNL were pretty good, if workmanlike. DMC (featuring the guy from CSI) got the place hopping and Neil bought it all home.
The Downie act is starting to wear a bit thin.
Oh Canada was inspired and moving.

I have almost all the CTV coverage on DVD.

From some of the comments, I wonder how many of you are talking without having watched the broadcast.

CTV did a great job. Americans are furious that MTV only showed the first song by Pink Floyd. I have all three. A great memory.

Given the handicap of a late start, I think the Barrie show was enough to make us proud. Our 'no name' acts were great, and we had some African music delivered by Canadians.

What happened to Burton Cummings? Anyone know?

The major omission I note of the event was an absence of jazz. Diana Krall was in town for the Jazz festival. I wonder if anyone even appoached her?

Yes that was his wife Peggy. They did a nice job on the song. Neil obviously has a lot of affection for the tune as he does a great version of it on Comes A Time.
