Leafs traded for Bernier, what do you think?

Ya well the hype of the Toronto media machine adds to high hopes for leaf fans and may attest to their delusions ( not a leaf fan, clearly).

I see them improving though as much as I don't like their fans. I like to be realistic and give the team credit where it's due.

Who knows about Bernier really? He will have a lot of pressure that's for sure!

Yes who really knows ? All great goaltenders were backups at one time but alot of backups with great numbers didn't pan out as number one goaltenders ... Toskola had fantastic numbers as a backup in San Jose ... Keep our fingrs crossed that he will be
the next great thing ie the next Rask ( who was once number one and was waiting for his big chance to be number one

It all boils down to the huge potential of Bernier to be #1 for many years to come.
Think we heard similar hype about Toskola, Raycroft, Pogge, The Monster. Hope Nonis has a better evaluation staff than his predecessors when it comes to puck stoppers.

He can say what he will but clearly he has some serious reservation, some mental block when it comes to Reimer. Hopefully he will move on from this obsession now and start addressing deficits at center ice and defense. Presuming he has two nickles left to squeeze under the cap.

As of today, the Maple Leafs have $19,608,333 in cap space.

There was also risk in not making this trade.

bernier has tremendous upside. there are comments above saying bernier was only a backup. imo almost every goalie in the league would have been a backup to quick.

That money will disappear quick. Khadri is looking for about 5 million a year as is Bozak. And Bernier still has to be signed. I'm not sure who else is a free agent, I'm not a leaf fan so I just go with what I read in the papers and on the Internet. But I've read Khadri wants the same cash that Grabs got.

They can look for $5,000,000 all they want, neither will get it from Toronto.

Bozak isn't worth much (if any) more than $3M/yr, he'll get about $4.5M, but I hope not from Toronto.

Kadri is a RFA, he'll be getting somewhere in the neighbourhood of $2.2-$2.5M.

Bernier, my guess would be $2.2-$2.5M unless the two sides do something long term.

Overpaying for Grabo has created a bit of a conundrum; we'll see what happens and how much is left.

Enough to bring in a ufa? History says most teams overpay. More trades probably on the horizon.

Bernier, second thoughts. Think I'm warming to it.
Over the course of 82 games good goaltending will influence a lot more wins than a potential 30 goal scorer.

Amid the excitment of Chicago winning the Cup last night is the clock has started on the buy-outs: no later than 48 hrs after the Cup being awarded, teams have to be done with buy-outs for this year. I do not know if I want to see Grabbo bought out, but he's due to make a big bundle this coming season.

BTW, anyone knows what happens to the player after the buy-out? Is he allowed to sign with another team, what about the salary he is still due?

I can't believe the Leafs had to agree to pay $500,000 of Frattin and Scriven's salary.

Also, I don't know how Reimer will take this as I see it is a slap in his face after taking to the Leafs to the playoffs and to game 7 against Boston
All it will do is make Reimer better with Bernier in the lineup. You don't make a name for yourself by getting all pissy when your team trades for another goalie. It makes you play harder, especially when it looks like the guy they just got is going to be the #1.

I have mixed feelings about this trade. The Leafs already have a #1 goalie. What they really need is a #1 centre and also a Subban rushing type defenseman.
Ummmm... Jake Gardiner?

Yes that is the best part of the deal cause we can put to rest the Luongo talk ...
Finally!

I don't think Leafs fans are delusional after watching them come so close against Boston who as you know made it to the cup final. They're on the right track, after many years of being off the rails.

You got that right!

I think this deal means Luongo will never wear a leaf uniform.
I am ambivalent. I have not looked at the Leafs stats, but I don't believe that goaltending was the issue they needed to address.
At the same time, Bernier will push Reimer for playing time, and that is not always a bad thing.
I did not like how Reimer addressed the acquisition, he kind of sounded like he was whining.

Not to take away from Reimer, but lets get a grip, it was game 7 of the first round of the playoffs, not game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals.
Reimer was great last year, but puck handling and controlling rebounds needs to improve drastically.

If Reimer sees it as a slap in his face, and sulks instead of rising to the challenge, then he will not be the goalie that leads us out of the first round of the playoffs.

That's the first thing I noticed when I looked at the differences between Rask and Reimer. Rask rarely lets out a bad rebound. In fact in the last two games of the playoffs, it took fluky bounces to get a couple by him. Reimer is good, but not in the same league as other top goalies.

Please note a correction on the buy-out period as:

The buyout period starts Wednesday at 11 p.m. ET and ends on July 4 at 5 p.m. ET.

Instead of what I posted earlier. My apologies.

Here is Chicago's first goal scored by Toews.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZ_vFoNItsE

No fluky rebounds or anything. Toews simply crosses the blueline and fires the puck through the five hole from the faceoff spot. Bit of a soft goal in my opinion.

Bickell's tying goal with just over a minute remaining.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfnZ06f6CgA

I did not see any kind of unusual bounce. Puck came from behind the net, right through Chara, in front to a waiting Bickell for the easy tap in.

I like the move for a goalie.

But the more important move is trading Phaneuf.

That deal has to get done and I hear they are shopping him now!

I did not see anything that was unusual on the SCGWG either.
Shot from point hits post, Bolland taps it in.
