They're still the most influential rock band, by far. They pushed the boundaries musically and revolutionized style world wide simply by growing their hair and later on by getting high and expanding our minds. They took off in so many directions, you certainly can't say that about Cream.
People who were already stars like Bob Dylan and the Beach Boys rethought their music because of them and in turn influenced the Beatles further.
They were the first British band to break out, paving the way for thousands of others who acknowledge them.

I always thought it was a good idea to break up when they did, they were essentially solo artists using each other as backup bands by the White Album and needed to mature and respect each other if they continued to work together.

I remember vividly where I was when Lennon was shot dead. I believe Howard Cosell was the first to broadcast the sad news, on a Monday Night Football game. I had the pleasure of seeing the “Fab Four” twice live ‘over ‘ome around 1962, 63 at a smallish venue in Nelson, Lancashire. The bands musical skills at that time were somewhat limited, but who cared, you couldn’t hear them anyway, all the chicks were screaming so loud!!! I was a HUGE Lennon fan, and my favourite Lennon song is “A Working Class Hero”, from his first solo album.
As a previous poster noted, The Beatles, Stones, Who, Elton John, Clapton, etc were heavily influenced by blues artists such as John Lee Hooker, Sonny Boy Williamson, Howlin Wolf, Muddy Waters, etc. Many of whom I also had the pleasure of seeing live in small Blues Clubs in England. One reason many of the blues greats came to England to play was they couldn’t get work in the States, due to the colour barrier. Kinda sad isn’t it?

Anyone remember seeing the news when John Lennon died? I was way to young. His last words to the killer was "look what you've done"

I was in university when JL was murdered by MDC. I remember coming home from a night class, watching Monday Night Football and getting the breaking news during the game. He was my favourite Beatle. He made Paul seem like a star instead of a twit. I'll never forget that moment. He was a troubled man, but often the best of us are.
