They're still the most influential rock band, by far. They pushed the boundaries musically and revolutionized style world wide simply by growing their hair and later on by getting high and expanding our minds. They took off in so many directions, you certainly can't say that about Cream. 
People who were already stars like Bob Dylan and the Beach Boys rethought their music because of them and in turn influenced the Beatles further.
They were the first British band to break out, paving the way for thousands of others who acknowledge them.
I always thought it was a good idea to break up when they did, they were essentially solo artists using each other as backup bands by the White Album and needed to mature and respect each other if they continued to work together.
