Oh I AM TIRED OF WATCHING HOFFMAN BLOW LEADS. His glory days are over
You can say that again. And again and again and again… Jeff Hoffman needs to go. He is not a clutch performer and he folds under pressure. He's almost always given a clean inning and there's no excuse for this nonsense. He is a momentum killer. The Jays finally get to 500 and he fucked it all up and they lose again today… Total momentum killjoy. I feel bad for him. I mean he seems like such a nice delicate guy… But he's not a clutch performer and we don't need that in our bullpen… The Blue Jays let Chad Green go so they can also let Jeff Hoffman go. For our franchise that is so fast to DFA people… I'm surprised he's still here. I would expect the Jays to eat the remaining contract and just let Hoffman walk.

I put some of the blame on Schneider. He left Hoffman in long past it was clear he didn't have it. Hoffman is good when he's on, but a disaster when he's not. Bringing him in with a 4 run lead was ok. But, have someone warming up just in case he doesn't have it. Hoffman seems like a good guy and good teammate and I don't like to pile on when someone like that is going through a tough time.

Schneider should take the blame just for putting him in even if it was for just one batter.

He left him in because the backup plan was Seabold who had been recently released be Detroit. They had to go some combo of Hoffman and Varland in the 8th and 9th.

I know the strategy was Varland to go against the best hitters... but with Hoffman's ability to really lose it quickly, you needed him to go first and have Varland back him, even if Hoffman faces the better hitters.

Thats a good point. Put in Hoffman and put Varland on quick standby if Hoffman stumbles

But, in the game under consideration, that means put Hoffman against the heart of the batting order and not being able to pull him for the next 3 batters when you only
had a 1 run lead

It's a great time to be a Bison season ticket holder.
I looked at a few games when I was off before the long weekend.
Only 20-30 seats available near the foul poles at the time so they're drawing fans.
And Sahlen Field has no outfield seating.

I often feel bad for fans of some minor league baseball teams because it seems franchise affiliation changes every few years. It's hard to develop/maintain team loyalty that way.
Kudos to Bison fans. I recently read they set a record in 1991 for highest attendance in a season for minor league baseball, and the record still stands.

Next dilemma: How long do the Jays go with popular veteran Springer at lead-off. Springy oaffered today, dropping his ave. to .207 ???

At some point, there has to be a decision and we are over 1/3 of the way through the season.

Blue Jays: It’s time to reconsider George Springer in the leadoff spot

George Springer’s time in Toronto has had its fair share of ups and downs.

He was excellent when healthy in the first two seasons of the six-year, $150-million deal he inked ahead of 2021. He struggled the next two before shocking the baseball world with an MVP-calibre campaign in 2025, capped off by a legendary home run in Game 7 of the ALCS to send the Blue Jays to their first World Series since 1993.

Unfortunately, Springer has been a shell of the player who delivered that signature moment so far in 2026. The time has come for the Blue Jays to recognize this and construct their lineup accordingly, which means removing him from the leadoff spot.

Springer is slashing a paltry .202/.283/.343 with five home runs and 14 RBI thus far. His wRC+ has fallen from a career-best 166 to 78, and he’s been worth -0.4 fWAR through his 45 games this season—many of which he played while nursing a fractured toe.

He has experienced worse batted ball luck in 2026, but this decline in production goes far deeper than BABIP or a foot injury. He’s also seen a steep decline in his barrel rate and hard-hit percentage compared to last year. His .140 isolated power is the lowest of his career—the thump has left his bat.

Yet, despite all of this, the Blue Jays have continued to have Springer hit leadoff because of his pedigree. That needs to change if they intend to compete in 2026, especially against tough right-handed pitchers against whom he has posted even worse numbers.

Springer has a .590 OPS against right-handed pitching this season—that is well below replacement level. Nathan Lukes has a .798 OPS by comparison and is probably the most logical candidate to hit first. Rookie Yohendrick Piñango could also be an option with his .902 OPS and four home runs in 85 at-bats against right-handers.

Ernie Clement is another candidate to bat leadoff, given how well he has been hitting, especially once Alejandro Kirk and Addison Barger are back to lengthen the lineup. He’s slashing .316/.333/.460 against righties, effectively becoming platoon neutral after some stark splits last year.

All three would be better options than Springer atop the lineup right now. The Blue Jays need to give those valuable at-bats to someone who is performing better, at least until Springer gets rolling. Hitting lower in the lineup could be exactly what he needs to rebuild his confidence.

The fact of the matter is that it is not early anymore. Tough decisions need to be made. Springer could still end up having a great year, but none of the data under the hood suggests a turnaround is coming. The Blue Jays need to accept this and make a change at leadoff.
