50th season anniversary game today. 77 cents hot dogs at the Rogers Centre. It was exactly 49 years ago on April 7, 1977 when the franchise started at the CNE Stadium. News segment even showed some snow on that very day. :p LOL

Blue Jays put Barger on IL, Kirk has surgery, Yesavage nearing return

Cody Ponce has ACL surgery scheduled for next week. He's likely done for the season, but could possibly be back in time for the postseason.

Alejandro Kirk might be back towards the end of May, following thumb surgery.

Tyler Fitzgerald has been called up from Buffalo as an extra infielder. Josh Fleming was DFA'd after one appearance.

The mlb(dot)com url suggests that Patrick Corbin will replace Barger on the 26 man roster. That suggests to me that Max Scherzer won't necessarily be ready for his next scheduled start, but he's not hurt badly enough to be put on the 10 day IL.

Unfortunately, John Schneider getting himself tossed from the game failed to fire the team up. In the last three games, the Jays have scored only 3 runs.

Absolute BS call from Umpire Dan Merzel.

That call made me wonder if I knew what the hell a balk is all over again.

On one of the occasions when Billy Martin was feuding with an umpire, (stationed at 1st base for the game in question), Billy had been warned that he would be immediately tossed if he argued against another of the umpire's judgement calls.

After a 'bang bang' play at first on an infield grounder where Billy's batter was called out, Martin ran onto the field, got right in the umpire's face, holding his hands three feet apart, and said "I know a place where the fish are THIS long!"

Patrick Corbin career stats

Corbin is a former two-time All Star who has been disappointing since the 2020 season. Yes, he did pitch 4 scoreless innings... against low A players in the Florida State League.
He actually had a bit of a bounceback season last year after four straight over 5.00 ERA and 1.45 WHIP seasons. In 2025 he was 4.40 and 1.37 with Texas. That being said it reeks of desperation to bring him on the roster. But we're decimated and our call up options are almost non existent.

This start is definitely not what we were expecting after the success of last season. Losing series to the two worst franchises, including a sweep by the White Sox. Yikes!

Our pitching is decimated. The bullpen has been taxed and we have one arm there, Brendan Little, who is throwing beach balls off the mound. We can't score a run to save our lives and took an absolutely embarrassing 14-2 loss to LA. Things can't get worse than this, can they?

Little got sent down a couple of days ago.

These guys are trying too hard at the plate. They have the approach right now of swinging at any pitch that looks like it might be a strike… They're not in that rhythm and proper groove of simply zeroing in on one section of the plate and searching for one pitch. They need to collectively find this rhythm as a team… That's the offense they have and that's exactly why they were so effective last year… "Passing the baton"

I am confident they will find it. As soon as a few injuries come back it'll come together and when it does, this team is going to steamroll everybody.

It will be interesting to see how long it will take for attendance to drop if the team slump persists. Right now, the Jays have probably sold a lot of advance single seat tickets, based on last year's World Series run.

It has always been the policy of the American League to post official attendance based on tickets sold, as opposed to 'bums in seats'. If the upper deck is sparsely populated by mid-season, that probably won't be shown on TV broadcasts.

The Jays should thank the heavens in the sky that the rest of the American League East has gotten off to such a shitty start aside from the Yankees. I really do believe once the Blue Jays find that groove they are going to be superb with a disciplined and premium offense. Maybe Sanchez should stop smiling for a bit lol.

His body language and sulking when he's not doing well, is probably the worst I've seen in a very long time lol.

Dave Stieb wasn't very charitable when one of his fielders made an error.

Possibly the worst prima donna in my recollection was Tim Foli. Looking at his career fielding stats, without having seen him play regularly, you'd have the impression that he was just a very average player who was good enough to play regularly on a bad team. He had 5.7 career WAR in 16 seasons/ 10 of 100+ games, but he was actually a very talented defensive shortstop.

Infielders' error totals from the 1970's and earlier are often inflated because of groundskeeping from that era - the infield 'dirt' was crushed construction bricks, and sometimes there were 'chunks' which caused bad hops at the last second, if the ball hit one. In Foli's case, if he did make an error, he would go into full hissy fit mode, kicking the ground, and invariably he'd botch the next ball hit to him because his mind was still dwelling on the previous play.

Manager Gene Mauch loved him like a son because he seldom stuck out and he was excellent at executing sacrifice bunts, but he rarely had an OPS above .600, playing just about every day.

Makes me wonder, exactly what do they do during spring training??? Maybe it's time to revise the spring training routine.

...im a little worried about Addison Barger and his larger physique now. I'm a little worried he's too musclebound and lacks the same flexibility. I've always been a big fan of his bat speed and plate coverage and I've posted about that here before he really showed the promise that he shows now… But the funny thing about baseball is that muscles are great, but you still need to keep your flexibility and reach. Sometimes being too musclebound shortens your reach therefore shortening your plate coverage. Or being too musclebound shortens your reach on pitching and shortens your extension… It's no coincidence that the hardest throwers have legs like tree trunks, and arms like spaghetti lol

They have been saying this for an eternity about baseball and the physiques required for peak performance.
