Well heating with oil is pretty expensive. My house is set to 21.5 now, nice and cosy. Fuck the bill. You can close of vents in unused rooms, but IMHO prolonged exposure to low temps is probably not good for your body, joints, muscles etc... especially if you are not used to it. (i.e no an Inuit). Maybe eat some seal blubber.. I hear that's what the folks that really have to live with extreme cold do. But yeah, -15 today, all that snow, it sucks.
Within limits that can work, but your furnace is designed to move a certain volume of air, restricting the flow below that level makes your furnace work harder and actually move less heat.

You're definitely right that low temps stress your body and can affect your health. They're also not very good for the building materials in your house... drywall, wooden floors,....

You should meet my 44 year old Italian friend who doesn't work and lives on $9,000 a year. He spends his days at the covered mall with 86 year old men who also don't work and/or at the public library where he can use the computer for free. When he leaves the house in the morning I think he actually turns the furnace off.

Aren't tea light candles made out of paraffin? If so you're breathing in a lot of crappy chemicals.
