This thread forces me to tell a story, not one I am particulary proud of, but a cautionary tale nonetheless.
Bought my SO a great coat with a fox fur collar. One time we are walking from the parking lot to a restaurant in downtown TO and this grubby young woman (early 20's maybe?) on a mountainbike starts giving her a hard time. Now she was ESL (east european I think) so it was hard to tell exactly what she is saying but it was anti-fur, fairly coarse and had something to do with us deciding who lives and dies...but it was definitely about the fur. So, not surprisingly I gave her a peice of my mind and we start to walk away, when this young woman decides to "buzz" my wife by riding by real close to her and brushing up against her with her bike. First time I am startled and did not react, but the genius decides to ride by for another pass. This time she ends up on the ground with a couple or three broken bones and a inoperable bike. Now the crowd around was pretty pleased, but the police don't always see things the same way.
After all the rigamorale I was not charged and I understand the young lady had her visa revoked eventually, but it really was not worth the hassle of the whole event.
Moral of the story, don't give someone fur or wear it out unless you are ready to be harassed and not concerned about the risk of escalation.
In our case, the fox collar is detachable from the coat (love that coat) and it now usually gets used without the collar, unless it is a really fancy event and then it goes back on.
