Here comes the iPad killer:

Motorola is working on an iPad-sized tablet device running Google's Android software, which could launch "as early as this autumn," the FT's Ken Li and Paul Taylor report.

The device could be tied closely to Verizon's FiOS TV service, with support from Verizon Wireless, the top U.S. wireless company, the FT reports. Unlike Apple's iPad, it will support Adobe's Flash video technology, and will ship with two cameras.

I think there is room in the market for more than one successful device (even though Pekkkr doesn't think there is a market), don't know if this will be it or another Zune iPod killer....

DON`T BUY AN IPAD:

Wait for the newer version which will have face chat - front facing camera. I`ve seen facechat on the iphone4 and it is real time hd video. On the Ipad it`s going to be unbelievable.

iPad Supply Constraints Begin to Ease, iPhone 4 Expected to Follow

Thursday August 19, 2010 10:28 AM EST; Category: iPhone
Written by Eric Slivka

Fortune noted yesterday that supply constraints for the iPad appear to be easing slightly, with shipping estimates for orders placed through Apple's U.S. online store now coming in at 3-5 business days, down from 7-10 business days. The change was noted in a research brief from analyst Jeff Fidacaro of Susquehanna Financial.
"iPad demand remains strong with production ramping above expectations," writes Fidacaro. He has revised his iPad build forecast for Apple's (AAPL) fourth fiscal quarter to 7 million units, up from 6 million units. And his 4Q iPad shipment estimate now stands at 4.75 million units, a 45% increase from Q3.

The Fortune report also shares results of a weekly survey of in-store iPad and iPod availability at Best Buy locations conducted by Barcalys' Ben Reitzes showing significant improvement this week for all iPad models.

Meanwhile, GigaOM reports on a research note from Rodman Renshaw analyst Ashok Kumar claiming that production of both the iPad and iPhone 4 is beginning to approach demand, with iPhone shortages expected to ease by the end of next month.

The wait for a new Apple iPhone 4 order should be shorter by the end of September, which would help Apple sell 14 million new handsets in the third quarter and another 15 million in the final three months of 2010 according to an industry analyst. With the expectation that LG is ramping up production of 9.7-inch display panels, iPad orders should flow faster as well, with Apple having the capability to sell 5 to 6 million tablets this quarter.

Shipping estimates for iPhone 4 orders placed through Apple's U.S. online store remain at three weeks, however, suggesting that a considerable backlog still remains.

Makes one wonder how much of this `considerable backlog` is due to all them worker suicides at the RED Chinese plant Apple uses to make their iToys!

Great outfit you support bottie....their slave workers jump off the roof over there!....

This is very close to my experience:

5 ways the iPad's still better than my iPhone 4
by Scott Stein

Last week I endured a crazy line and my own nagging doubts/consumer guilt, and pulled the trigger to buy an iPhone 4. In our CNET office, I feel like a bit of an apologist. Many fellow editors are bullish about Android, and I already owned a 3GS. My purchase couldn't be fully justified, other than via one bit of logic: the iPhone remains my most-used, ubiquitous gadget.

I also, as you might recall, own an iPad. It's been a surprisingly useful device, more so than I even expected. Even so, Apple's tablet has gotten tough love from tech editors since the iPhone 4 launch. A number of bloggers have even started claiming that, now that they have the iPhone 4, their iPad's been left in the dust, rendered effectively obsolete.
That's ridiculous.

I felt compelled towards the iPhone 4 for its video and camera features: FaceTime, and a higher-quality still and video camera. Having a kid, I've justified the camera upgrades as worth it for out-of-town relatives and quick snaps. I traveled last weekend and left my iPad at home deliberately, a test to see if I'd find the iPhone 4 to be as useful. Sure enough, I dearly missed that big old iPad. Yes, its screen resolution now seems weak compared to the impossibly fine-pixeled Retina Display. It still lacks multitasking and iOS 4, at least until the fall. But it still has some serious advantages, ones big enough that I won't be ditching my iPad anytime soon.

Battery life. The biggie. The iPhone 4, like my old 3GS, still has problems at the end of the day, making me take actions to conserve my usage. The iPad defies attempts to drain its battery- I can't even imagine how I could get it to drain completely in a single day short of playing videos non-stop. On any given morning, I can forget to charge my iPad and be just fine. Even if only a 30% charge remains, that's usually more than enough for some basic e-reading and light email over a full work day.

Screen size, dpi notwithstanding. The iPad still has a greater pixel resolution than the iPhone 4 (1,024 x 768 vs 960 x 640), even if its dots-per-square-inch pales in comparison. Text does seem fuzzy now in comparison to the iPhone 4, but videos and pictures still look better to me. I'd rather watch Hulu or YouTube videos on my iPad than on my iPhone.
Multiple panes for email and other programs. Even without iOS 4, the iPad's pane-splitting tricks make email management and browsing far superior to the scroll-list method the iPhone still employs. I regret not having email threads yet, but I'd rather be able to read an email and see other email headers without swiping back and forth.

Writing. Either with the on-screen keyboard or via Bluetooth keyboard, writing on an iPad is feasible. It isn't so much on the iPhone, beyond basic note-taking.

Digital magazines, PDFs, and e-reading. Chalk it up to the screen size or a lack of Retina Display support, but the iPad's still the place to go for any digital publication, including a wide variety of admittedly overpriced magazines and surprisingly robust PDF readers. The iPhone 4 is technically capable with its A4 processor and similar specs, but that tiny screen will always make it harder. And, despite the impressively fine dpi on the iPhone, a 9.7-inch display is simply easier on the eyes in most instances.

I still maintain that the iPad is really competing for time with my laptop, not my iPhone. In most usage cases, I'm generally caught with the question, "do I take my laptop or my iPad?" I never ask that about the iPhone/iPad, because my iPhone is always with me.

Do you own both devices, and if so, how have you found living with them? Which one would you rather have?

I did a day trip to NYC yesterday (Jersey City actually) and for the first time left the computer at home and took my phone and the iPad - was such a relief walking through the airports with almost no weight on my sholder. Was gone from 6am to 11pm and never needed a charger for the iPhone or iPad....

I'll have to try the VGA doggle and try presenting from the iPad.

Apple now building 2M iPads per month to meet demand

By Neil Hughes
Published: 08:05 AM EST

Apple has doubled its monthly output capacity of the iPad and is now manufacturing 2 million per month to meet strong consumer demand, but the company reportedly would like to go even further and produce 3 million every month very soon.

Analyst Katy Huberty with Morgan Stanley indicated that iPad builds recently increased to 2 million per month, up from the previous number of just 1 million a month. Apple allegedly indicated to its suppliers that it would like to produce 3 million a month starting in the fourth calendar quarter of 2010.

It's likely not coincidental that less than a week ago, iPad shipping times for new orders from apple.com improved to 24 hours. For months, customers had to wait an estimated 7 to 10 days, as Apple was surprised by strong demand for the device when it launched in April.

Officials with the company admitted they were initially caught off guard by the demand for the iPad after it launched, and they were unsure when they would be able to satisfy that demand. Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook noted that the iPad is not taking a typical early adopter curve, and already has a "very big" market.

"We want to take full advantage of it, and so we are investing enormous time and resources in increasing our capability in getting iPad out to as many people as we can," Cook said in July.

Despite strong demand, Huberty reiterated that the iPad has not cannibalized sales of Macs. She noted that U.S. Mac sales are tracking up 20 to 25 percent year over year, and have been accelerating in recent weeks.

I'm overseas right now and you would not believe how big a demand there is for iPads. Those things are popping up everywhere.

I strongly suspect that this Xmas season it's gonna be top of the gift list for a lot of people.

As for copycats, read an article where it seems that those won't be arriving in any sort of numbers until 2012.

As you state, this is what 1 analyst opines!

Again the iPad is perfect for tech challenged rubes who don't realize they are getting a very limited lower powered PC, more low powered than even a netbook that costs half of what an iPad goes for! So low powered that the iPad is incapable of simple multitasking!
But then tech challenged folks can't multi-task....
