I will always remember him as the piece of shit that spit in the umpires face, you just can't live that down IMO.

He was the Jays best 2B ever, that is for certain... However, his career did go downhill after the spitting incident, I will give you that.

Taking Eckersley deep.

Who gives a shit about the spitting? If Hirshbeck doesn't, nobody else should.

I repeat, Eckersley deep to right, arms upraised.

He was the complete ballplayer. A "5 tool" man. If someone called you a "fucking faggot", would you sit still and take that crap? The umpire was lucky that he didn't get punched in the face.

October 11 ... a Sunday

Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum

The ALCS ... Jays lead 2 games to 1, but Oakland leads game four 6-4 and are on the verge of tying the series. Dennis 'The Eck' Eckersley was on the mound, the best closer in the game at the time.
In the previous inning he had given a little fist pump when striking out a Jays batter.
Devon White led off the ninth with a single. Alomar comes up and takes Eckersley deep to right.

TIE GAME !

Jays win it in the 11th to take a 3-1 lead in the series.

It was possibly the most important point in franchise history. In my opinion, just ahead of the Joe Carter walk off World Series winning home run in game six of the '93 Series.

That is how I see Alomar every time I think of or hear his name. Oct 11, game four, arms raised. As Shack already said.

Best 2B ever.
One of the best in MLB ever.
Deserves the HOF first ballot to be sure.
People who keep going back to the spitting incident are just retarded. Sure let's all get behind McGwire, Canseco, Sosa, Palmeiro, Clemens, et all for the HOF but not Alomar? Sure pre-meditated steriod use is forgivable but a spur of the moment bad judgment (spitting on an umpire) is not? Get real.

Baseball groupies who knew the man well said he was skanking it out at his half floor condo in then Skydome hotel. As for the baseball 'player' fantastic! Who really cares that he gave engagement rings to half Toronto's women! :)

Not 1st Ballot, Robbie was eligible this year, and fell 8 votes short of induction, he received 73.7%.

75% is required for election to the Baseball HoF.

Evidently, in the history of HOF ballotting, Alomar came the closest on first ballot without making it. He should be a shoe in next time.

Best second baseman ever is Joe Morgan. Its not evan that close - Morgan was so dominant in his five peak seasons from 1972-1976.

Alomar is in the class of a Craig Biggio - one of the top 10 second baseman ever, but not one of the greatest hall of famers. Definetely better though then a Jim Rice, Andre Dawson type hall of famer. He is in that middle-upper tier of hall of famers, but not top tier.

As for the names you mentioned -- Alomar got alot more votes then the two you mentioned who are eligible. Canseco is not even on the ballot anymore (less then 5%), and McGwire hardly increased to 23% last year. This year`s vote for McGwire will be interesting as he finally apologized prior to this year.

It's "not even that close"? Uh, yes, it is. Eddie Collins, Rogers Hornsby, Nap Lajoie. All off the top of my head.
Alomar should safely make it. Nobody with that level of voting has ever failed to be elected. If he's not elected next year, I'll be shocked.
I was simply comparing Alomar to Morgan, as I was responding to the clàim that Alomar was the best second baseman ever.

It's more than the spitting. It's the whole diva performance in the last part of the '95 season when he basically quit on the team. It's the abandonment of the Jays by him and some of the other talent when the team was essentially left high and dry to (attempt to) rebuild in the mid 90's.

Talent-wise, he was amazing. Not so much in terms of character.

I am still pissed that he gets regularly honoured by the Jays, when he walked out on them and when character players like Hentgen, who gave it all up for the team are ignored.
