Just tell Rogers unless they waive the rental box fee, you're going to the competition. They will because they can. They did for me.
Thanks for the tip. Is your box just HD or HDPVR? Also, do you have other business with Rogers such as cellphone, internet, etc.? Maybe Rogers consider you a high value customer. Me, right now I have only cable TV with Rogers at about $47 a month.

The HD pvr isn't 1080, it is 720. The only real source for a 1080 signal now is (I believe) a blu-ray or HD DVD.

I could never understand how they say that 720 is HD, yet not as high Def as 1080. So if 480 is SD, 720 is HD, what is 1080? SHD? But they don't call it that.....

Well, that is going to change if you get HD channel packages.....Really though, if you by an HD tv, it'd be kind of a waste if you don't pay extra for the HD channels......

Just remembered something: If you do end up buying the HD PVR you'll have to contact rogers and get them to authorize the box before you can use it. Just call their tech support or I think they have an option for that on there automated response system....

Thanks. Picked it up from Futureshop this morning. And they weren't flying off the shelf either...
Futureslop has em too? man.....

There are new right? not refurbs?

Me thinks Rogers or Scientific Atlanta might have produced a little more than needed......

Either that or a new model is coming out.

Everyone and their brother has 'em. I was considering not lining up this morning but I didn't want to risk having to possibly wait a week or more to pick up a PVR (and possibly not for $200 off). Turns out I could have walked in at 8 and picked it up.

Futureshop, Tiger Direct, and a bunch of other stores has 'em. Rogers has the sale on all week. Interestingly, Best Buy did not have the PVR (they did have the regular high def box). I'm glad I went to the store because a box came with the TV that (according to the sales guy, so we'll see...) supposedly gives me free HD channels (just the basics I'm guessing) for the first year.

In case you all are still wondering where to get the rogers HD PVR, Canada Computers is selling them also:
Both HD and HD PVR boxes are on sale at Audio2001 as well. Picked up the HD box because I don't do much recording. Also, isn't Blu-Ray coming out with a Blu-Ray recorder in 2009?

At the time, I only had an HD PVR box. You should ask them to waive it to keep your business.

Do you guys use the PVR that much? I currently have a VCR and a DVD recorder and I rarely use them to record TV programs. I did use the DVD recorder to record my disintegrating VHS tapes onto DVD some months ago.

Oh shit, I use my PVR almost constantly. If there is something on TLC or discovery that I want to watch, I record it then skip the commercials. Same as shows like Mythbusters who give you a 4 minute synopsis of the last 5 minute segment.

I also throw movies on it to watch at a later date. Like casino royale. I didn't feel like a Bond movie when it was on TMN so I recorded it and watched it later.

I'm kind of working to do the reverse. I'm looking at the hauppauge HD converters that can record output from the PVR to my computer. Then I can burn them to disc. There's all kinds that do SD but only 2 or 3 that do HD.

Mine is around 22 ft by 14 feet. I sit around 15 feet away. 52" is best value for the money if your room is big enough.

According to that chart, you're sitting too far away. You should have bought a 60" for your room. Your tv (according to that chart) is a good 20% too small for that distance.

I didn't read the whole page but the proper size/distance should be so that when looking directly at the middle of the tv, without moving your eyes, you should just see the edges of the screen (not the frame of the tv, just the image part).

Anything farther than that and you're too far away.

Same as heightwise. Your eyes should be at, or just slightly below, the centre line of the screen. If you have to "up" at the TV, it's too high. This is a common problem that people seem to think that putting a tv up in the corner of the room is just perfect.......

I mean really, if you're going to sit so far away why not save some money, buy a smaller tv, and sit closer?

Hey tboy,
Do you think that a Blu-Ray recorder will come on the market in 2009? If yes, would we be able to record TV programs directly to an internal Blu-Ray Harddrive and/or DVD disc? (I think that I actually saw a Boxing Day price of under $100 for a Samsung Blu-Ray player earlier to-day. Weren't they like $400 earlier in 2008?)

I haven't read anything about blu ray recorders but I can guarantee you they won't be cheap when they do hit the market.

Blu Ray players were around $500 - 1000 to start about 3/4 yr ago, about 300.00 this past 6 mnths.....you can still pay over 500 for one, but most entry level ones are hovering around $200 - $250 now. The one you saw for $100 was an insignia POS.

I doubt they will have an internal hard drive, I don't think any DVD burners do now.

Seriously, pickup one of those rogers PVRs and an external drive and you're all set. Unless you want to build a media centre pc, they have Blu Ray burners now for $249.99.

To get an extra 3 inches one has to pay an extra $3,000? Those last 3" cost more than the first 52"?
yeah, kind of like the bugatti veyron: 700 hp got it to 180 mph, it took another 700 or so to get it to the next 60 mph.....

just remember: the first 60" plasma was around $72,000.00

As for plasma or lcd at 52", doesn't matter thundarr, you're still sitting too far away.....

Shoot. It never fails to happen. Found the TV I bought on Monday advertised for $50 less to-day. Shoot, shoot, shoot. Normally, I would have paid with my credit card which has a 60 day low price guarantee but I had to use those darn gift certificates from my last project. The whole thing is a conspiracy.
