Oh no! What in blazes is a Rocketfish 8-ft cable and why would I want one? What have I done by buying an HD TV?

You have to purchase an HD cable that connects the HD box to the TV. It's not included with the TV. Tboy posted about it in the thread above.

Oh for those wanting to record blu-ray, they are available for PCs. Instead of spending $300.00 for a blu ray player, I built a whole new media pc for about $600.00. Now I play my DVDs etc through it and am thinking of the hauppage HD card so I can record with it too.

Not me. But maybe I should check out that thread too! :p

No preference on LCD/Plasma.
40-46"
1080
No preference on interlaced vs. scan
I'm liking Samsung
Not particular about contrast ratio
Yes, will be playing games on it
Don't know how many HD inputs
Ok, here's what I would reccommend if you're going out shopping:

LCD (no burn in, my panasonic does experience it)
Size: how big is your room?
Something like a 100,000:1 would do, but it does make a difference
You want as low refresh rate as possible for games
If you're using it for HD tv as well as gaming you'll need 2 hdmi inputs at least. If you have an A/V receiver that has HDMI capabilities then you only need one on the tv, you just plug everything else into the receiver.

Whoa! Did you mean 10,000 to 1??? I've only seen 10K,20K, 30K to 1.

Right now it will probably only be around 10 feet away, maybe 15 feet tops in the not too distant future.

I was waiting for Tboy to answer but he is probably out celebrating Christmas Eve like any normal person.

In my limited travels, the highest contrast I saw is 50,000-1 in the Samsung Touch of Colour Series 6 TV's.

This is on sale right now at Futureshop online for $800.
It looks identical to the Samsung LN40A530 that I bought for $799.99999 on Monday. (Query: When you buy from Future Shop online, do you have the option to pick-up to save shipping charge?)

Sorry, yeah I was out....10,000:1 one too many zeros.

Although the new Aquos is supposed to have 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio.

So I made my purchase online at Futureshop.

Got the Samsung 40" LCD HDTV, 1080p, 20K:1 for $800. Also got the cable for something like $25 (plus a bunch of other shit).

The only downside was that all the PVR and digital boxes were sold out. So now my dilemma is, do I go to the store anyways on boxing day just to get that. :(

Good stuff! How much is the shipping charge for the TV? (I also bought the cable and would have gladly gone to the store to pick it up but doesn't appear to be an option.)

Well, rogers and tiger direct both have the boxes on sale so you can always try them.

$55. There's a special delivery charge since you have to be home for delivery.

Where did you see the sale for Rogers? I can't find anything on their website...

Yeah they do, and check out their boxing day sales. They are offering the HD PVR for sale at $200.00 off (to purchase) and something like 6 months free rental.

I actually got 2 yrs free HD PVR rental when I signed up but I think that was because my building converted to Rogers and it was a new move in deal. I know they offer this to new condos.....I'd fight for that.....

As their commercials say: hooking up the HD is easy, it's ordering, and choosing the packages that's difficult.

OH, just a warning too. Make sure you check your bill each month. It took Robbers over a year to STOP billing me for the free HDPVR. They'd bill me, I'd call, they'd bill me, I'd call, They billed me, I called....each time they said they'd make a note on my account to not charge next month but they always did.....
I think it's unacceptable to be charged a $26 rental fee for the HD box and still be charged over $100 a month in cable bills.

Just tell Rogers unless they waive the rental box fee, you're going to the competition. They will because they can. They did for me.

Don't dream about buying it. Look at my previous post.

The cable was $69 at Futureshop for 8-ft. length and around $100 for a 12-ft. length.

So yeah, pretty expensive for a frikken cable.
If anyone is thinking about buying cables, look no further than Monoprice. You get cables under $15 Cdn that are just as good as cables that are $150 here.
