Speed cameras should be on EVERY street within the city of Toronto. If you are a licensed driver then it's a no brainer that you DON"T SPEED. Period.

They should enact a law that once you get 3 speeding tickets within a calendar year your license is suspended for 1 year and in order to get it back you need to re-take your G1, G2, G, etc.

Haha. You’re funny.

If they did that virtually everyone would stop speeding and the City would stop making money off speeding tickets
Exactly this. Speeders will no longer have a place on the streets of Toronto. Only orderly drivers will remain and those who cannot comply with the law will be exiled to public transport. They can also fork out big bucks to take a taxi/UBER or will have to beg family/friends for a ride to their destination.

People would start lighting them on fire.

As it is, they are getting tipped over and spray painted.

Right, but the City would never go for that because they'd be losing $100 to $200 million worth of revenue annually

I don't like them, but if they help slow down speed in school areas, they're good.

Let’s face it, it’s just a cash grab.
The city is desperate for money and they will do whatever they can to fill the coffers.
If you go online you can find out the exact location of each camera and you just have to be careful when you’re in that area.
Some of them are in 30 km zones so it’s very easy to get a ticket, no wonder thousands of people are getting dinged every day.

10 mph is like 16 km/h. I used to work with someone who got a 10 km/h over speeding ticket. Cop must’ve been having a slow day. No pun intended.
Got nailed for 10 over in Campden on a weekday morning about 25 years ago on the way to college. Maybe 730am. Not long after the shift change in Grimsby. Bugger was hiding up beside the firehall.. Crotchy ol' bastard too. Scribbled the dreaded "R" on the back of the ticket. I doubt I was going any more than 61/62 km/h. After that I took the QEW.

We need to have skeptics to ensure that we come to the best solution for everyone who is affected by these speed traps. If everyone goes along blindly then how do we really know what we are doing is right?

I'm just wondering, would hanging a towel over the lens meet the legal definition of vandalism??

Don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time.
You gotta be kidding.

There are rules that make sense and rules that are put in place for other reasons. Speed Camera's are in the later group.

Do you really think everyone is just as unsafe driving at 50?

Are professional drivers as unsafe as 80 year olds who can't see above the steering wheel?

No, professional drivers are not doing the crime, and neither are a very large percentage of drivers who are good, experienced and ..... safe.

Speeding causes accidents. Accidents kills people. If someone cannot understand that simple thing then they should not be driving. Period.

This is just about the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Do you know how speed cameras work? Since they can't identify who was driving, tickets are sent to the registered owner of the vehicle. Your idea is idiotic.

Speed alone, in the context of this conversation doesn't cause the majority of accidents. I don't even like using the word accident, they're collisions. While excessive speed can cause a driver to lose control and contribute to the severity, simply traveling at 10-15 km/h above the posted limit (which is what the vast majority of tickets are issued for) on many streets isn't inherently dangerous. Especially since speed limits have been reduced by 10 km/h on many streets. If more than 50 percent of the combined total of fatal and injury crashes occur at or near intersections, then why is the majority of speed cameras set up mid-block? Can you say revenue?

Prior to the installation of the speed cameras, when was the last time you heard of a child being struck by a speeding car in a school zone? Don't get me wrong, one is too many, but it's not like this was happening on a daily basis. In a city the size of Toronto, thankfully it's a rare occurrence.

If the city was truly concerned about children's safety in school zones, they would adopt a system I've seen in many parts of the US. They put up signage and flashing lights to warn drivers that the speed limit is reduced and fines are doubled during school hours. That's how you actually slow people down. But while they claim to be interested in safety, they're really more interested in generating revenue.

Speed camera vendors use revenue generation as their number one selling point. So it's easy to see why cash strapped cities like Toronto are keen on adopting them. It's also why they move them around. Send the ticket to the owner. No points, no insurance premium, no pulling you over and making you wait while the officer checks your ownership, registration and to see if you're impaired. Just a tax, a speed tax.
