Don't know about sitcoms, but the greatest TV show in the history of TV shows was "Lost". There will never be anything like that ever again. ;)
Don't know about sitcoms but the best movie of all time is Godfather.

For me without a doubt it would be Fawlty Towers and Only Fools and Horses. The Brits are geniuses when it comes to comedy. There are only 12 episodes of Fawlty Towers and 30-plus years on I laugh my ass off at the show. Fools and Horses is just classic. The writing is just amazing. Even the American classics like All in the Family, Three's Company and Sanford and Son are remakes of British comedies.

The fact that there are a handful of shows we're advocating, many of which have been off the air for a long time, speaks to their high calibre. That's why we haven't seen anyone mention "Charles in Charge" or "Facts of Life" (or a thousand other titles). So many of these great shows were pioneers of their time (e.g. Lucy, Honeymooners, All in the Family) you can't just pick one. We're certainly well on our way to a Top 50 list, though.

Thanks to those who have mentioned the Britcoms (Fawlty Towers, Yes Minister, Office, etc.). Several Britcoms have been the inspiration for American versions, so a tip of the derby to them as well.

Anyone remember Fern Wood Tonight?
That was a classic. It was a summer replacement for Mary Hartman and was far better. That was where I first discovered
Fred Willard. He and Martin Mull were brilliant.

Man,if it wasn't for 'low class' you people would have 'no class' at all.

"Sanford & Son" by a mile.

"3rd Rock From The Sun" was also pretty good!

Yep, there were a lot of sitcoms in the 70s and this was certainly one of them.

I thought Frasier was hilarious. Excellent writing, impeccable delivery. But All in the Family & M*A*S*H (the Henry Blake years) were excellent too.

I too cannot believe MASH did not get more votes. Could be because war is a touchy subject.
I remember hearing that fans of the show were pissed that they killed off Col. Henry Blake.
It took me until the final couple of seasons to warm up to the show. It was never my fav, but I have caught all the episodes on reruns.

I agree with the 'Mork and Mindy' statement above. I still watched until Winters joined the cast.

My fav is Mary Tyler Moore. It should have been on the original list. I have only seen MTM on reruns and have not seen all episodes. The wife turned me onto this show.

As for Brit shows, I liked "Are You Being Served". They tried to bring it back years later where all the characters moved to the country. It was OK, but it did not last.
