Grammys: Why did they let that clown ruin Sting's song?

It's just seems like this Shawn Paul's type of rap music requires so little talent since he is just rapping/talking without the need for melody or rythym.

It's interesting how one's words can be blown out of proportion by the racism police here. I am not trying to be racist - if I was I a racist I would admit to being one.

It seems a lot of you guys are putting rap in one big unflattering category.
There are a lot of hip hop artists who have really deep/meaningful lyrics and on the flip side there are lot of artists who just spout a lot shit.

But that goes for any genre of music.

How about giving some HipHop/Rap a chance. Give a listen to some of these songs; listen to the lyrics.

Public Enemy's Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos
N.W.A.'s Fuck the Police
Gangstarr's Who gonna take the Weight
Biggie Small's Juicy

A lot of thought and emotion was put into this music; and its a reflection of urban culture that some of you of an older (and possibly whiter) generation do not understand. Granted it might be a little more agressive than Bob Dylan (and Bob Marley) but that doesn't mean it doesn't take talent or skill to create what these artists do.

Nobody is asking you to like it but how about a little respect (to paraphrase Aretha).

Canada is changing gentlemen (and women); you got to deal with it.

Is there some defiant reason for why, throughout this thread, you're virtually all alone in spelling "Sean" as "Shawn"?

Look, people, rap/hip-hop/dancehall is a legit musical form, I agree, I very much agree. But to try to win an argument like this is like an art expert trying to convince a neanderthal that colour-field abstraction isn't just something you can do with a paint roller (or something that can be done by monkeys, or 6-yr-olds, etc)...

It has been awhile since a poster has placed his/her foot in their mouth as deeply as lumix, and since there has been such a universally united front against someone. And lumix just keeps on making it worse by continuing to post. Too funny!

For the record, I don't think lumix is a racist. I just think he is ignorant, close minded, and clueless.

Remy martin though, I have no idea what planet that guy is from.

And because he's letting it all hang out on an ***ESCORT REVIEW BOARD***, he's all that--PLUS, a bit of a pig. (Step outside of TERB for a sec, and consider that fact.)

Wonder how his dates (civilian, or "professional") feel in his company...

Hey Lumix....you ever try rapping and or dancehall reggae?

Its funny how you can comment on something you know nothing about.

Seriously....try rapping (or worse yet sing dancehall) and tell me how easy it is......you'll be in for a huge surprise.

As for those discrediting rap as a legit genre...bear in mind that it is generally a new type of music. Don't be so quick to say its for kids, it hasn't been recognized long enough to make such a comment.

Yeah - I remember the last time a bunch of folks got their collective knickers in a knot about music they just didn't get...

"Rock ’n’ roll has always generated controversy, as various institutional groups have attempted to portray it as a threat to community values."

"The musical style was so powerful that the white audience was infected by it, despite the social stigma that listening to “race music” possessed."

Rock 'n' roll again - replace "race music" with rap, more specifically gangsta rap.

Rap has something to say to the kids - and dissin' something because you don't understand it doesn't say anything about whatever they're listening to - it just says you're past it.

You don't need to like rap - but having a clue about generational change is a good idea, because they are the future, and you aren't - if anything, at least it gives you an idea of their take on the world you've given them.

And that, I think, is the real reason many older people dismiss rap out of hand - it shoves the failure of the shiny ideals of the peace, love and happiness folks of the 60's and 70's in their faces; less violence, poverty and racism?

Guess again.

Rap is about as low as we can go "musically". The next stop is silence is guess. How long does it take to record a rap cd not counting reefer breaks? About an hour and a half?
Silence, huh? How about a "John Cage" SP session, where it takes 4'33" to cum

***oof***

{of course, I can guarantee that a Lumix doesn't know who the fark John Cage is/was}

It is funny, I think it was bout 5-6 months ago on Canada AM, they had an english scholar on who has analyzed the lyrics of Eminem and he claimed that Eminem is the greatest poet this genertaion, the Shakespeare of our time, also saying that he ranks up there with Dylan.

I was one of those people who dismissed rap when I first heard it. Over the years, I have to admit though, it has grown on me. It is still not my favorite musical genre, but I do understand its appeal and its cultural significance. I particularly do like such "white boy" rap and hip hop artists such as the Beastie Boys and Linkin Park.

I agree with the others and would suggest that such rap songs such as Grandmaster Flash's 'The Message', Public Enemy's 'Fight the Power', and Eminen's 'Lose Yourself' are as well written and powerful as anything Bob Dylan wrote.
