Tories probably don't want to be associated with either Ford's
Nobody wants to be associated with a sinking ship. I said before that most likely the release of information on Doug Ford's past, allegations of drug use and trafficking by the Globe and Mail came from higher up the chain in hopes of derailing Doug Ford's political aspirations. However despite the fact that his brother the mayor appears to be a slow train wreck which may go off the track at any moment, he still enjoys a large underestimated amount of loyal underestimated support in Toronto which only the final election will determine. Should the incumbent mayor win the next municipal election, a lot of back room people who were formerly supporting him and have since abandoned him will have to eat crow. The loyal supporters may then drink a toast to the fatman on the pipe.

I get around.
In case there was any remaining doubt, The Sun has now proclaimed: Don't Re-elect Ford.

Regardless of whether Ford is charged with any crimes — and if he is he will be entitled to the presumption of innocence — the police investigation is not the determining factor when it comes to whether Torontonians should re-elect Ford Oct. 27.

Citizens have a right to expect a higher standard of conduct from their mayor than that he is not charged or convicted of crimes.

They have a right to expect their mayor will not consort with criminals and thugs.

By his own admission, Ford smoked crack cocaine while in a “drunken stupor” as mayor, then lied about it for six months.

By his own admission, while serving as Toronto’s chief magistrate, he purchased illegal drugs.

By his own admission, he has been inebriated in public and acknowledged he probably drove after drinking.

Despite promises to the citizens of Toronto to clean up his act, Ford has not done so.

He told reporters he was no longer drinking because he had a “come to Jesus moment”, then admitted to drinking after the Steak Queen video surfaced showing him ranting in Jamaican patois.

He continues to blame others for problems his own actions have caused.

The reality is the citizens of Toronto can no longer trust the mayor of Toronto on virtually anything he says, and his own actions have left him with so few allies on city council, he is politically impotent in any event.

Its funny awhile ago Harper was bragging about a rightwing threeway for Toronto, the three stooges if you will, Ford, Hudak, and Harper, and now we maybe looking at the three musketeers instead, Chow, Horwath, and Mulcair :D

Sweet dreams rightwingers.
Anytime you're picking your pols by their labels—or using labels to condemn—you've just proven you're part of the loser's game we've made of present-day politics.

Save that stuff for America football and other children's games. That Harper thinks in such labels should be evidence enough of how destructive it is.

Bit surprise to see Chow wanting to be mayor
If she is going to push her NDP adjenda:
Chances of getting NDP agenda through Canada Parliament ... little now and virtually none after the next election.
Chances of getting NDP agenda through Ontario ... none - there are still Bob Rae survivors alive.
Chances of getting NDP agenda through the largest city in Canada ... excellent !

With all reasonable alternatives hitting each other over the head - I'd say she is ready to pounce.

I disagree, barring arrest, the election is the incumbent Ford's to lose. Chow will succumb to the same dynamics that sunk Smitherman, support downtown, lack of support and connection in the suburbs. Either Stintz or Tory, most likely Stintz will drop out mid race. Stintz will throw her support at Tory. If Ford goes out before the election, the municipal voting turn out will drop to before the last election, to below 40%. Chow does not have enough time to win over the suburbs, her NDP affiliations, and Miller memories will bite her in the ass. I saw her once in person, she is a smart, shrewd politician with a nice tight little body, but the city is far too polarized for a Chow victory.

Actually - I think he's already taken a sure thing, pushed deep into his crack pipe and smoked it away. The Sun was a loyal supporter and even they have given up on him.

I wasn't predicting an outcome, I was just suggesting that for Chow - there isn't much impact that she can make outside of being Toronto mayor. I can't see her passing up the opportunity to run.

Chow doesn't have to win over the suburbs. She's already got the Chinese vote all over Toronto.. I hope for a Tory win. I think Chow will be the same as Ford but from the left.. A lot of smoke and mirrors and talk of "If you're not with us, you're against us"... It's the kinda shit I hate..

On the MP pension question: Six years, contributing one dollar for every coupla dozen the taxpayers kick in. Under Harper's fixed elections law, that means a retiring MP'd have to win as few as two elections.

Since you opened this sidebar: The real issue isn't whether MPs deserve pensions, or how generous they should be. Rather it is the transparent and self-serving greed that the continuation of their plan demonstrates, at a time when pension plans for ordinary workers are being shrunk and abandoned, and when OHG resists all efforts to improve the one universal Pension Plan we have. Which, thanks to being insulated from the malign meddling of 'free-enterprise' MPs is doing quite nicely.

Gotta remember, their plan was started when MPs were paid a pittance for re-locating to Ottawa for an uncertain period, having to live in shared apartments* and not seeing their families for months, at a time when the post-war boom meant more and more folks were signing (union) contracts with employers promising pensions as well as good pay.

What we need is a movement to assign the MPs' pension plan to the CPP to operate—as an example to other Plans—and to have the payouts pegged at the average that ten-year teachers and machinists get. People who decide what's in the trough we share should have to drink from it.

OK, back to Poor Picked-on Wobbie Fowd, who never got a bweak.

You are right on mp pensions- it really needs fixing

In the afternoon on the very first day of private Garbage Collection Chow tweeted that her mother's garbage hadn't been picked up yet and then said something to the effect of "I guess that's the price you pay when you privatize."

It was insane.. It was a move that Crackhead RoFo would pull.. Blame blame blame.. "This is another move by the corporate elitists!!" Just nonsense.. Meanwhile Toronto suffers through another day of gridlock without anybody at City Hall giving a damn.

The latest poll by a Toronto Chinese newspaper: Supporting Olivia Chow 26.32%, Not supporting 72.31% and no opinion 1.38%

Not every Chinese will support her just like not every Anglo-Saxon supports Rob Ford.

It is naïve and racist to believe that Chow has the Chinese vote. The Chinese community is not so simplistically described as there are Cantonese and recently many highly educated Mandarin mainland Chinese in Toronto. Those two groups do not necessarily see eye to eye and Chow is of Cantonese descent and speaks a little Mandarin. Furthermore she is female and was married to a Caucasian which comes in to play at least in the comments I have heard from members of the Chinese community, Cantonese, Mandarin and even Hakku speakers. She does not have the Chinese vote necessarily as a given, there is a good amount of discord there. Chow is an intelligent, shrewd politician who practices left of centre politics, does not have too much regard for the tax payer, yet lives her private life extremely conservatively. If Chow does win, she will be forced to become more conservative by the financial problems facing Toronto, which will put her in conflict with the left leaning council. It will be interest this upcoming election.

After not following any of these threads about Toronto City Hall, because of the geo-political situation which is very serious, it is quite a shock.

Toronto City Hall politics, is basically Mickey Mouse politics. But, what a show, very entertaining.

If Olivia shows up at the door, I will tell her straight up that I'm Ford Nation. And you know what she will do next?

She will laugh right in my face. She is a nice person, she always laughs in my face. I laugh back. Then she probably going to say, "yeah I get that a lot."

There is no way she is going to win this election, very very small chance. So what is her motivation? She's 60 years old, survived cancer. She's Chinese, I would dare to say, this is it for her public life. She had to throw her hat into the ring, because the people who supported her though her career wanted her to run. Did she really want to run? If she runs and wins, fine. If she runs and loses, they she would have said thank you to her supporters, then go retire.

Olivia has a brain. She really going to give up her seat in the House of Commons to be at City Hall, and knowing it is a tight tight race. And if one other right wing candidate drops out, and supports the other, what chance does Olivia has? Are we to believe Olivia never thought of that? I think she is running because she is doing it for her friends, and can retire to a less stressful play.

The only way I see an NDP candidate winning this election is to raise taxes, but then give the people what they want. Some people want casinos for entertainment and subway dollars. Some people wants drugs, no explanation necessary. Some people want legalize prostitution, no explanation necessary.

Olivia is sharp enough to know, that even though people don't want to see their taxes raised, if she gives them what they really want, ie gambling, drugs, and more SP, then she has a good chance.

The important stuff.
