The cities you mention are pretty blue. It's the white legacy small towns that vote 90% red.
And the Great Lakes have plenty of those same small towns that vote 90% red. In that regard, rural OH isn't that different from rural SC. Older or less educated white folks who go to church on Sunday and don't like the cities.
So you're probably correct in that the divide is probably big city / small town these days, instead of North / South.

The majority of voters have realized that in the present political climate around the Globe no one is insulated. Polls are predicting the present and not the future. That is why they say if there is an election TODAY, then this would be the outcome.
Things can change between now and November. We saw that stark difference in the polls before and after Biden decided to throw in the towel!!

You seem to forget that in 2016 Minnesota almost went red as Trump came within 1.5 percentage points of Clinton. 3.8% went to the Libertarian Gary Johnson and another 1.8% went to conservative independent Evan McMullin.^^^^^^^^^^
