Remember folks, pop music only.
I think you need to maybe clarify what you mean by pop music then. As far as I'm concerned Black Betty by Ram Jam has cross appeal. It reached #18 on the Hot 100 charts and was played on mainstream radio stations. Who said rock music can't be popular? Prime example Stairway To Heaven by Led Zeppelin. Many non rock fans bought that single.

Looking through the definition of pop music it seems to encompass some pretty broad perspectives. But I think this is a pretty guide to whether a song is considered pop genre

Pop music generally uses a simple, memorable melody and emphasizes the rhythm, often with syncopation, and stripped down to a basic riff or loop which repeats throughout much of the song. Pop songs usually have a verse and a chorus, each with different musical material, well as a bridge connecting them in many cases.

Black Betty ain't pop.
If you look up the genre of Black Betty is says it's "pop rock". But I will agree with the consensus here and say it isn't. I'm removing it.

IMO BB is not pop, it has a harder edge to it, so its rock, to me pop music is of lighter style melodic, and catchy.

I may have been guilty with posting "Cat's in the Cradle" as its more "folksy" if I'm using the term correctly, it has a serious lyrical sense to it.
I have deleted the song.

In which case Stairway to Heaven is nowhere close to a pop song.

Driving to work back in the early 70's to slug it out all day working on construction, this little ditty would cheer me up and make me sing along to it....

This is a beautiful song that gives me a sort of melancholy feeling:

This thread brings back a lot of good memories. It's hard to believe that back in the 70's, all these finely crafted pop songs were ubiquitous on AM radio. If you were to tune in to an AM station now, you will find the most appalling crap.

So true!
