I've said it before, I'll say it again. These summits attact the lunatics of the WORLD. It's impossible to prevent them from having their fun and games unless you want to shoot them all.

It would be far far better for everyone if they just had these summits on an Aircraft Carrier out in the middle of the ocean. If these guys are truly here to work, then that shouldn't be a problem.

I can just imagine all the long faces on the yahoos who make protesting a full time occupation when they'd have to charter their own Air Craft Carrier in order to have their fun.

You missed the point--if after the government spends a billion dollars on security the protests simply don't materialize that's going to result in some uncomfortable questions about irresponsible spending that would do far more damage to the government than any actual protest ever would.

Don't worry though the protesters aren't that smart and won't be able to help themselves from putting on a show that will help justify the wasted money.
Yeah, but isn't it a swell Canadian fantasy: Wearing protest T-shirts by Roots™, scrubbed and shiny, politely stopping at Don't Walk crossings while they march in orderly ranks on their side of the yellow line sharing Sharpies™ for their 'Hello, I'm _____, protesting _______' nametags, and chanting to BNL tunes: "If we had a billion dollars …".

I know, I know, when you were protesting in the '60's you walked right through the " Do not walk " signals. What a rebel !

Oh yes, there are packs of police and police cars everywhere around downtown. The outside perimeter is occupied by Toronto police and the secondary perimeter is occupied by the RCMP. They will be ready and armed with fully automatic weapons, snipers and riot gear. I'm sure there are many people reading this that have absolutely no idea what the G20 is doing and why poverty groups, lefties, tree huggers, bleeding hearts, etc are protesting. I bet you more than half of the protestors have no idea what they're protesting about...they just need a excuse to rally together and bitch about decreasing social justice caused by large companies and corporate greed. So anyways, I've taken the time to find a link that explains what the G20 will be talking about for those that are interested:

they should just have these meetings but not tell anyone where the meetings will be until they are over.

Here's something else to read.
The G20 summit: A billion-dollar waste of time
Why are we hosting a useless, money-sucking international photo op?

That would do far more damage to the Conservatives than anything the protesters are likely to do.

Can you imagine? Protests organized for Ottawa instead of Toronto and completely sidestep the billion dollars worth of security??

That would be hilarious.
What would be the point to that? The world 'Leaders' are here in TO and in Muskoka, not Ottawa, for the summits. Protesters would want maximum coverage.

Anti-capitalist anarchists rioting in the streets, is not the dialectic clash of youth against older generations, but rather that of the stupid against everybody else.

Well said. I always believed if the people on the left actually spent their time productively...that is, instead of wasting time soaking in socialist idealogy and bitching about the free market, they would actually allocate that time towards self-improvement and learning how to succeed in life...they would be much further ahead and our country as a whole will surge forward. It's always the left that brings everything down and slows progress.

If they showed up en-masse in Ottawa instead of in Toronto they WOULD get maximum coverage. Moreover, they would have maximum effect assuming they have a leftish agenda and would want to hurt a rightish government.

If they show up in Toronto and have a big fight with the police their ISSUES are not going to get coverage, the media's going to feast on the scenes of violence, no-one's going to bother to report on WHY, and the government is going to say "I told you so" and smirk when asked why it cost a billion dollars.
