Wow, he was currently pulling in $400,000. per year plus I'm sure other bonuses, allowances etc , he wanted a $200,000 per yr. raise? sorry, I dont think so!

Cherry just got $700K a year...

Everyone tunes in to see what Don has to say. Why else would they give him that kind of jack for 2 mins per week!

I think Ron Mclean does an excellent job and is very intelligent. He is also an excellent foil for Cherry. Who else would put up with his bluster?

I can't say that he's the quintessential host, but for the amount of work he does compared to Cherry, he deserves a big hike.

Dave Hodge was still the best host on HNIC.

I say get rid of Cherry. He's a boneheaded clown. MacLean at least contributed some intelligent insight into the game. But actually, when you consider Peter Mansbridge weighs in at 500Gs a year, I don't think either deserves that kind of money. Mansbridge is far more important to the CBC than either of those two.

I say get rid of the CBC.
Just pull the plug on the CBC.
Why the hell do we have to pay for the CBC?
If the CBC can't make it on their own in the real world like every other network, so what?
McLean and Cherry can go work for TSN or another network which is not a subsidized, money losing waste of taxpayer cash.

I think we forget that although CBC is funded by our taxes, HNIC is by far the biggest moneymaking show on the CBC. And whether you love them or hate them (or merely tolerate them), Coach's Corner has been shown to be one of the main reasons behind HNIC's financial success. Isn't Coach's corner brought to us by Labatt's (which has got to be worth a ton of cash to the CBC, given the nominal Coach's Corner production costs)?

Mansbridge seems to be underpaid because the CBC has made a business decision to not run as many ads during the news. The CBC's parliamentary correspondent would surely get more cash if his reports were sponsored by Labatt or Molson.

Plus, who cares what Mansbridge is paid. From a purely economic standpoint (forget about the cultural significance), HNIC is the CBC's most valuable show. It's like saying Peter Jennings should make more than Jim Nantz.

Let's face it, Cherry and Maclean had some real chemistry. The CBC is going to have a hard time finding another foil that works as well with Cherry and HNIC will suffer.

Cheers

It would also make the reports more fun to watch, and easier to swallow.

Cherry brings in the advertising revenue, MaClean doesn't.

At least the government has that part right!

Did'int CBC just hire a couple of blond females to host the useless Hockey Night in Canada pre game show? Way to go HNIC, now you have the token females so people can say you're "with the times". The money spent on them could have went to Ron Maclean .

It's funny, I thought it would be impossible to replace Dave Hodge when the CBC ran him out of town.

If anyone need's to be replaced it should be that crusty old Bob Cole! He should have retired when Hodge was canned!

Some of Bob's great insights:

"Here we are, overtime, next goal win's it!"

"Game seven, if you don't win here, you go home"

"It's gotta cross the goal line to be counted"

Another thing about the CBC, they need to get up to date with the camera work. Has anyone ever caught the ESPN feeds? They have great camera work. Even on Fox, they used to use that shot from behind the goal, excellent.

Maybe they'll team up Peter Puck with Grapes for coaches corner - Unless the voice over (for Peter) demands a pay raise.

HNIC should try and get Jim Hughson, he's probably the best play by play man in the biz. I think he just signed a longterm contract with sportsnet though.

My fave Bob Cole quote happend right before the epic gold medal game between Canada and the U.S. in Salt Lake City, Bob Cole blessed us with this insightful gem " Harry, you can tell both teams want this one real bad " Classic Bob Cole indeed.

BRING HIM BACK

How much do you think they pay the broadcasters to do Sunday or Monday night football? A hell of a lot more that Mr McLean was getting paid. HNIC is the big ticket in the Great White North. Keeping in mind the smaller market here, why can't he command a decent raise. It would still be consierably less than his counterparts in other sports south of the border.

Afterall, for all intense purposes, he was the modern day version of Hockey Night in Canada.

Rusty that's great... Howie Meaker told me about Bohemian Club, but I didn't trust his recommendation of Vanessa.

They won't be able to use that angle now since they've put netting up behind the end boards.

Interesting ...

The comments say one thing, the actual votes say another. (34 for, 7 against as I type this.)

CBC chose fiscal restraint over team chemistry. Time will tell if this was the right move. Personally I think the whole inner workings of Coach's Corner and HNIC as a whole will change very noticably with the departure of Ron. I wonder in fact, if Grapes will be able to keep going without Ron. I also wonder if the satellite hotstove will continue in the same fashion. I found that Ron had really evolved the hotstove into a watchable, not always accurate but interesting feature.

It's not going to be the same without Ron McLean. But, life goes on.

The first mistake was paying that idiot Cherry 700k. The second was not giving Mclean a comparable deal. At least Mclean is Canadian and did a stand up job with his interview of Gary Bettman. Cherry is just a personality that never won anything in hockey, do we need to bring up his Mississauga Icedogs. LOL If he was a stand up guy Cherry could have done a deal to include his "pal" mclean. But once again our tax dollars are going to guys like this that make a hell of a lot more money than i ever will.
