I see you're changing your tune. "Some" blame (like maybe 2%) is a lot different than "most of" the blame.

"Some"..."Most"......whatever. I still maintain the linesman screwed up.

Downie, Hatcher......what about Kubina's hit from behind on Coburn?

did you watch that video?

hatcher's feet do not leave the ice until after contact was made. clean hit...no penalty was called.

lets go flyers :)
Byerent.....try pausing the video at impact. In my view he left his feet. Whether he was penalized or not isn't relevant. See my above post re Kubina.

Planet, take your own advice and watch the video of the Downie-Blake scrum. The linesman had been doing a good job tying the idiot up and was trying so hard to pull the idiot off that they both went down - that's when the idiot got his hand free and popped Blake with an absolute cheap shot.

It seems like you're just listening to Millen and Cherry too much and not watching the video objectively. Either that or you just don't want to admit that you're wrong! :D

I don't like the Flyers or the Leafs, so I'd like to think I'm being objective on this one. Aside from Byerent, it's obvious that I'm debating with the Leaf Nation here :p

His actions and the league's tacit approval of them caused a Grade 3 concussion and the massive damage to my eye, orbital bone and skull that effectively ended my career. Therefore I am suing both for $25 million in potential lost wages and suffering."
Who's quote is this? I'm curious.

to close to tell imho...i think it would be tough to call him for charging on that.

yeah, the kubina hit was borderline....but i don't like how players turn their back at the last moment.
I wouldn't call him for charging as in running Steen, as the video doesn't show enough before the hit. But I would penalize him for leaving his feet, whatever the actual penalty is for that (roughing?).

Anybody find the Kubina hit on YouTube? Coburn was cut on the play. No penalty.

Actually, not a Leaf fan by any stretch - Ballard and then MLSE ruined them for me. Just a fan of good, clean, hard-hitting hockey. Not cheapshots, stickwork or clutch and grab.

Who's quote is this? I'm curious.
It's a paraphrased quote of what you would probably hear if the NHL removed the instigator rule after having it in place for a number of years. If a Downie or Avery were ever filled in badly and had their career ended by a Laraque or some other heavyweight as retribution for their cheap crap, they would undoubtably sue and actually have a case in most jurisdictions. Think Steve Moore, but with an even stronger legal standing because there would have been a league rule in place at one point to deter that behaviour.

The perfect case...

...for having a tough guy on your team...and I don't mean a marginally tough one like Belak...one that can actually drop them and win. Downie shoulda been eating his lunch through his ass, cause someone should have rammed his teeth down his throat..either during that scrum ...or as soon as he left the penatly box.

One of the many problems with the Leafs is they have all these large players..Sundin, Antropov, Poni, Kilger...and none of them have a toughness to them. Weasels like Avery , Downie, and last year Jannsen of the Devils always get the better of them.

though, Belak is adequate to take care of any of those guys.

Laraque or Brashear, though? absolutely not.

planet - i'm a hockey fan.
period.

my home team happens to be the leafs - so yes, i do cheer for them the loudest.

but i am educated (and level-headed) enough to call a spade a spade.

like some other posters in here, i think tucker is a piece of sh*t - he doesn't belong in today's game...

i also think kubina's hit was borderline (at worst)

but i will NEVER place blame (any of it) on the ref's for what downie did...difference is i was an on-ice official. if you watch the video, the refs fought as hard as they could to subdue downie - blake did not continue to struggle.

once the linesman wrestled downie to the ice, downie looked over his shoulder (to take aim), and delivered 1 single, precise, uppercut to blake - clearly a planned, opportunistic shot.

(edit) i had to add this after watching the video again - did you see him smile as he skated to the penalty box? what an ass...had that cheshire cat grin like 'ya, i just got him...' (/edit)

i stand by my position - downie is a P.O.S. - if you read some other hockey forums, you will see that even flyer fans are fed up of his antics.

Downie has yet to understand some of the code that exists.....when you are in a large scrum and tied up with a guy who never fights, you just get ahold of him and keep him from getting anywhere near the main event(s) to influence them in any way. This guy suckers Blake, then laughs about it as he heads to the box.

What he needs in addition to another spank from the league is a good old school beating laid on him by someone like Brendan Shanahan, one of the toughest and most respected in the league. His own teammates would let that one happen and stay away from him as he left the ice, no board beating, slaps on the ass etc.....a clear message. A veteran, let alone a rookie should not ever be allowed this type of behaviour. Mind you a veteran would not have reached around to sucker a 5'6" guy who never fights......

No class, and one day he is going to pay with some teeth and his nose when he pisses off the wrong guy.

Whereever I am now
YEah I agree with Jt as well ...

I would add that Downie knew Blake was tied up and he had a free shot , and took it.

Given Downie's recent history in his vast NHL experience , and the Flyers supposedly being under the microscope , I see no reason why the NHL wouldn't have a good look at this one

It Is Not Linesmans Fault.

THE GUY THROWING THE PUNCH IS AT FAULT

You guys are arguing the same argument as those who say the hooker is at fault because she dressed slutty! Arghhhh. I can't believe the stupidity!!.

And to say that people have thrown them in a scrum all the time in the past......Thats like saying hookers get raped...cause they are slutty...so lets do it again.

How absurd!!!!!!!!!

too bad belak wasn't in the lineup to set him straight.
I like your comparison... but I think this ass needs more than a spanking!!!
For some reason Deliverance comes to mind...
