FIFA = BBBoring

Last time I looked at some FIFA stats on Sunday night, here’s my summary
- goofy goals
- goofy goalkeepers
- Almost 40% of matches resulted in ties. What ever happened to OT or at least shoot-outs?
- 1 match had no scoring at all (Uruguay v. France)
- players routinely making miraculous recoveries from faked “near-fatal” injuries
- dives that would certainly be penalized in hockey
- delay-of-game tactics galore
- time clock that runs even when the ball is not in play

Now that’s what I call BORING. And these are supposed to be the best-of-the-best in the world playing at the highest level. Can’t wait for the NHL to start again this autumn and we can watch a real sport again.

Then don't watch.

The vast majority of the world is watching and enjoying this with all its glories and flaws (like ANY other sport). So one less TV set in Canada is going to make no difference whatsoever. The NHL hockey market doesn't even register on the world sports radar.

If anything is BORING to watch, it's certainly NHL hockey. With its thuggery, lack of finesse, goonship, whistles stopping play every 30 seconds, stopping for half-an-hour (and painfully splitting it up throughout the game) hockey is like watching paint dry while having your teeth pulled.

This is why I do not partake of NHL agony.

Likewise, if you don't enjoy FIFA, don't watch it! The party will go on without you.

Rest assured.

You suffer from American sports syndrome

It is an acquired taste

The slow build up to the few minutes of action - A great pass, goal or save - is what makes the game beautiful

+1. Like I said in another thread, soccer isn't for everybody.

shootouts and sudden death are for the next round. The first half of Round 1 is always a "slow start"... give it time - you will surely appreciate it more in the coming weeks.
That's what I hate most about soccer! The Shoot Out!!
How can you win a "Championship Cup" by a Shoot Out???

It's such a wimpy way to win.
I would have been disappointed if Canada's Hockey Team won a gold medal by shoot out.

Play like men, Win like men!

Soccer isn't really my thing, never had the footwork for it. Always been better off with hockey and basketball. But I do enjoy watching the games. Maybe it has something to do with my first girlfriend being a soccer player.

The one thing I cringe at when watching FIFA is the fake cries of agony. Guy falls down, but by his face you'd think he got his left foot shoved up his rear-end. It's a little disappointing that they put on these antics to try to get the star players from the other team off the field. What happened to wanting to "beat the best"?

Nameless,
I agree with a few of the other posters - if you don't like it, don't watch. The billions of viewers around the world won't miss you one bit.

I will concede that some of the first round games are less spectacular than the round of 16 going forward, but this is very similar to many of the NHL regular season games that often have very little menaning. Once the playoffs hit, they always seem to step it up considerably. Then again if you're a Leafs fan, you may not be aware of that. Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Yes, I "suffer" from American sports syndrome. Always found soccer boring, but since this is the biggest sporting event for most of the world, I thought I'd give it a try. I couldn't get past the constant din of those stupid horns. They take a boring sport, and make it boring AND annoying. Just my opinion. If you like it, drive on.

I watch the World Cup every 4 years and that's more than enough soccer to last me for another 4 years. The fake dives are an embarrassment and I'm surprised that the divers are just as likely to be from the super macho cultures which you think would want to "man up" and take it rather than roll around on the ground clutching their ankle and screaming in agony, all the while keeping one eye on the ref to see if a penalty is going to be called. It's at the opposite end of the spectrum from hockey, where the tough guy attitude is at times over the top.

Get rid of the dives and the stupid vuvuza noise and I'd be happy.

"If you want to play like men... leave the hockey players on that small little pond of a rink to play for 2 x 45mins non-stop - PLAY LIKE MEN - TOUGH IT OUT This whole 30 seconds on an off is for wimps!"....
Totally agree. Any game where the players keep taking a rest is not a real game. I guess the bursts of music make it more exciting for ADHD North Americans.

And Football, the American kind that is, what's with the shoulder pads and helmets? Check out Aussie rules for how real men play sports.

I don't see how you correlate shootout with wimpy. Its always the "easy" answer for non-soccer lovers but it makes no logical sense. its a rule of the game.
It makes perfect sense.

Why can't both teams play overtime(s) until a goal is scored to determine a winner?
Instead of a shoot out to determine the outcome?
Some soccer teams strategically play a trap system and prefer to go to a shoot out to get the win. How is that sportsmanship?
FIFA's reason is they don't want the players to "suffer or die". Total wimpiness!

I'm with you.

Watching soccer is slightly more exciting than watching paint dry, but less interesting than watching the grass grow.

I usually feel a coma coming on if I happen to be forced to watch it for more than 3 minutes.

The fake dives and rolling around holding your head like you just watched your mother get run over by a truck right in front of your eyes is laughable. They all do it, and they all look like the pussies that they are.

Hockey. Fast, skilled, tough, and no rolling around on the ice holding your head. Soccer players would last about 2 seconds on skates.
