Trivia: The most popular sport in China is basketball. Over 300 million Chinese basketball fans - that's more than every man, woman, and child in all of America.

How can 300 million Chinese be wrong?
maybe not 300 million... but i'm sure many of them are wong

The problem with the sport is that it lacks honour and plenty of the games are decided by officiating. With such low scoring games, referee decisions like red cards or penalties in the box decides games. It doesn't help that most of these players (even the very skilled ones) are whining for penalties and influencing referee decisions with diving.
When it comes to penalty shots in the elimination round to decide who goes on and who doesn't, I'd say that luck plays a bigger part than skill when it comes to scoring. On a good day, even I could go 3 for 3 on a goalie if I was lucky. The biggest trophy in all of soccer can be decided on penalty shots, and that country is seen as the best in the world - LOL - What a joke. Remember when Greece beat Portugal in 2004 to win the Euro with a corner kick?

I love playing soccer and I appreciate the skill, endurance and athleticism that these athletes endure. It's a great team game where execution of a game plan by skilled players should decide who's the better team. It's a shame that the game is ruled by officials and old fashioned rules.

But doesnt that hold truth for ANY sport that relys on officials or referees. How many games have you seen in baseball where a seeing impaired umpire blew a call and cost a team a crucial game. The same goes for football or hockey. Penalties are given at the referees DISCRETION. I have seen dozens if not hundreds. So that arguement just doesnt fly. And for Greece winning a game by a corner kick ? So what, a corner kick is the 3rd most likely way of scoring in soccer, next to the penalty shot or free kick. It is one of the games most practiced and important set plays. Greece beat them fair and square....twice in Portugal. I think you should blame Portugals inability to solve the Greek defence rather than blaming a country that defeated another country fair and square. TWICE

And yes even the very skilled players in hockey took dives and were treated differently on the ice than the others. Remember a guy named Wayne Gretzkey. You are gonna tell me that he wasnt " protected " or " off limits " when he played. How many calls went his way ? i can remember one instance perfectly when the leafs played the Los Angeles Kings in the playoffs. The zebras in that series cost the leafs a chance to advance to the next round. Because it was the untouchable Mr Gretzky. For every arguement you raise about soccer officiating i can raise a dozen more in ANY sport that relies on officiating, referees or judges.

Isn't the fact that these decisions like a RED card and a penalty kick decide the outcome of who wins most of the time in soccer, morseso than hockey or baseball? Particularly because of the low scoring games. One goal is all it takes most of the time. Look at Spain today, definitely the better team, but they still lost. Not saying that the Swiss didn't deserve it, but it was just one game. Especially with the importance of the games in the World Cup.

Baseball's boring anyways, but a blown call in the thousands of games they play in isn't going to make or break a champion.

Being protected or off limits has nothing to do with honour. Gretzky was a great player yet I still hate him for that high stick on Gilmour but maybe the Leafs don't score on that power play, yes, even 4 minutes for bleeding. My point is that the officiating in soccer makes a greater impact on the game than does other sports given the fact that a penalty consequence, like a penalty kick or a red card decides the game because the scoring is so low.

You see a lot more diving in hockey now which sucks. Don't know if it's because of soccer but it's disgusting. I don't remember there being a great deal of diving before but it's definitely less prevalent than in soccer. The fact that there's so few goals in a game, that's the reason why all the players are looking for a penalty or a yellow card on the opposing team. Everyone seems to dive once they get in the box, I wonder why.

Get this stuff out of the game, and maybe we can really call it the beautiful game.

What's that magic spray made out of? They should have it in hockey to eliminate lower body injuries.

I watch a heck of alot of soccer, and yes i agree that some of the dives make a mockery of the sport. Especially the guys that fall down as if they were shot by a snipers rifle, then they get up and set a worlds record in the 100 meter dash. But most of the red cards that i have seen, when you look at the reply, they deserved it. Red cards, being a man up or down in soccer isnt as lethal as in hockey. The teams just adjust the placement of their formations to try and cope. Ive seen many teams score while being down a man, and even keep leads that they have had before being carded. Ive noticed more and more refs carding guys that are obvious divers, hopefully it makes the game better.

I think Messi , can be as good as Maradona and Pele. I like him better than Ronaldo.
Maradona can't shine Pele's shoes. Beckenbauer, Platini and Cruyff are held in higher regard. I take it you mean CR7 and not Brazilian Ronaldo?

A little 3D Messi:

Well as the starter of this thread, I'd like to congratulate Andy of Mirage for producing the most cogent series of responses so far. Well written and well reasoned. There is one logical error in one of his earlier posts when he was waxing eloquent about the thrill being in a stadium full of 120K screaming fans. Granted, but that IMO has nothing to do with the sport of football. You could stage a tiddly winks match at mid field in front of the same fans and fans would get just as worked up. Don't confuse the sport itself with the bizzerko over wrought fans.

Point taken. Not really caring who wins in any sport ( cause im not on the payroll...lol.. ). I just love watching a hard fought game ( in any sport ). Its the overall experience while attending the game or match that matters to me. You must admit one thing though, soccer fans are pretty damn passionate.

While I dislike the amount of diving in soccer, it's really just one side attempting to exploit the rules of the game to gain some sort of advantage. This can be found in many games. The 10k fouls at the end of a basketball game, or running out the clock in football, knocking the net off its moorings in hockey... While they're all within the rules, they undermine the sportsmanship of the game.

I cant watch more then 13 seconds of soccer but I'll watch sum highlights on TSN. Sorry, thats all I can handle without falling asleep.
The absolute best was when a player wud trip on a blade of grass without ever making contact with the opponent. Then he wud grasp his ankle in agony like his foot was just hacked off with a dull saw. Then sum fake medic would run to the player from the sideline then (lol) spray his ankle with "Mystery Spray" lol. After the ref would get there late and raise a red/yellow card the hurt player would jump up and start running around.lol

This is classic slapstick comedy. I never take soccer serious cus of all the diving and academy awards performances that go on with the "Best Conditioned Athletes In The World"lol
