and those stupid little flags on everyones cars, except for Canada flags, and Leafs flags. the rest should be banned, you wanna fly another countries colours, then go fly it there not here.
I hate to say this. But I won't be surprised as we go deeper into the tournament, there will be more violence due to over-zealous flag-bearers.

The fact that the World Cup was referred to as simply Fifa in the OP just shows the ignorance. I find baseball, American Football and Basketball to be comparable to watching paint dry. Just my opinion. But I wouldn't start a thread to say how I dumb I think watching it is.

how about a guy wearing a Canadiens jersey on Yonge Street? would you have him arrested and deported to a labour camp in Kapuskasing :D

and the other twit who said this flag thing will turn to violence is hilarious, walk around this city, yes people are cheering for different teams but the overwhelming majority are Canadians deep down. That is we respect each other's right to disagree, I first hand witnessed a scene where in Euro 2000 after the Italians lost to the French, some French supporters came down to Dufferin and St. Clair to party with their Italians and everyone was having an awesome time. So please go back to the threads discussing how the Leafs are driving up prices and have no draft picks, because when it comes to football (yes it is football that you play with your feet) you dont know shite.

would the hillbilly crowd please go back to their trailers, Stompin Tom, malt liquour and mayonnaise sandwiches please!!! We live in the 500 channel universe now, if you dont like a sport or an event you simply change the channel. Your opinions are that the beautiful game is boring and slow, and go Leafs go are a blimp on the world map. Take the Super Bowl and Stanley Cup finals multiply it by 20 and you still arent even close to the numbers that watch this event in the world. Of course I wouldnt expect any of you to understand this since your world doesnt extend beyond your strip mall and your beer store.

To the OP, you sound just like the guys on Sports net comparing Hockey to Soccer. There's a reason why everyone in the world loves soccer except for North America.

It is by far the most skillful sport in the world. Sometimes you have to wait for it, but it produces some of the best pieces of sports skill. It is infinately harder to control a ball with your feet, than with your hands.

To me, hockey is boring and I'm Canadian. There are more goals yes, but most of them are crap. Pileups infront of the net, people hacking away wildly at a puck. Goalies the size of the net, a rink the size of my back garden and 80 shots per game.

North American Sports are bastardized with commercials every minute. It ruins the flow of the game. Football being by far the worst culprit.

Its also the most racially diverse sport in the world. You dont have to be a rich white man (hockey), A black man with a good 100 Metre time (Football) or a tall black man (Basketball) Or a lazy, unathletic fat guy (baseball)

Technique rules over pure athleticism in soccer and that's what makes it great. Lional Messi, the best player in the world is like 5'5 and 120 lbs. He would'nt even get a chance in North American sprots cuz of their emphasis on being big and strong. Thats what makes it so great.

It makes perfect sense.

Why can't both teams play overtime(s) until a goal is scored to determine a winner?
Instead of a shoot out to determine the outcome?
Some soccer teams strategically play a trap system and prefer to go to a shoot out to get the win. How is that sportsmanship?
FIFA's reason is they don't want the players to "suffer or die". Total wimpiness!
People actually have died with heart attacks in professional soccer. It actually takes cardio to play unlike American sports. Same with Rugby. Its actually American sports who wimped and pussed out.

Pads covering your entire body make you feel like a tough guy?

Shift changes and commercial breaks every 2 minutes so you dont need to train cardio? To me, thats wimpiness.

At least these soccer players died as Men!

And, you obviously don't know anything about conditioning.
Majority of Hockey players take Olympic level speed skating and conditioning programs.

The best athletes are speed skaters and fast track athletes. The amount of energy/mechanics expended in 15 sec is just as severe as running end-to-end of a soccer field.

Soccer is the most popular & most played sport in the world, for a reason.
Yeah, all you need is a cheap ball or a coconut....

That is exactly right. The brazilian children play with old tennis balls on the beach, and when I was a child back in the old country, we played on a farmers field, where otherwise cows were grazing. I sincerely believe that we learned a lot about balance and dribling by having to avoid the cow patties on the field.

I have some great pics of kids playing in rice patties (dry) with bare feet.....

I love the game!

Agree! Sometimes, I wish we're less North American. Mcdonald's, starbucks, .... why can't we eat real meat and drink real coffee?

Open your mind and see what the rest of the world has to offer.... Hockey is never a world game...

FIFA = BBBoring

Last time I looked at some FIFA stats on Sunday night, here’s my summary
- goofy goals
- goofy goalkeepers
- Almost 40% of matches resulted in ties. What ever happened to OT or at least shoot-outs?
- 1 match had no scoring at all (Uruguay v. France)
- players routinely making miraculous recoveries from faked “near-fatal” injuries
- dives that would certainly be penalized in hockey
- delay-of-game tactics galore
- time clock that runs even when the ball is not in play

Now that’s what I call BORING. And these are supposed to be the best-of-the-best in the world playing at the highest level. Can’t wait for the NHL to start again this autumn and we can watch a real sport again.
Thats your problem. You need to watch the game and not hold your breath for stats. Typical American sports syndrome.

- NHL also has goofy goals and goalkeepers. whats your point ?
- Football also has OT ( Extra Time ) and Penalty Shoot Outs but only in the knockout rounds. The group stages matches have 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw to each team, and 0 for loss.
- Agree that sometimes, players make most out of nothing and it has increased exponentially but we only see it cos of the awesome coverage. But yeah, I hate it too and this is coming from a football fanatic.
- Dives, well yeah, they are also part and parcel of the modern game unfortunately but its there ( as in, taking advantage when the ref isn`t seeing ) in almost any team sports. And it can be easily punished in NHL cos the playing field is too narrow and there are like what 4 referees who have a close up view of the action.
- Delay of game tactics....hmm, yeah, its part of football, just like fighting is in hockey. I am sure there are other tactics in hockey that don`t help the opposing team.
- The clock isn`t timed exactly because football is a flowing game. Time flows, football flows. you can say its a bit of randomness that gives the game that extra edge.

Anyways, I can understand why football is weird to american sports fans in the same way their sports is a bore fest to me, mainly due to the stupid amount of breaks every few seconds.

Correct - and that reason is that it is a cheap game to play. All you need is a ball.
Not really, one of the greatest players of all time....the Brazilian Pele grew up in a poor village where they bundled up some old rags and tied them in place with some string. This is very common in very poor countries even today. Wanna see unbelievable skill ? watch some old Pele highlights.

God Bless..........Andy

You're comparing apples and oranges. The World Cup is like the Olympics. It happens every 4 years and it's countries competing against each other. In hockey, NBA, and American Football, it's teams primarily within America and some in Canada competing.

Boston vs the Lakers tonight in game 6. This could end the series, and the Celtics/Lakers rivalry that has lasted decades continues. Bird, Magic, so many greats. You want to watch intensity, watch that. The series has been brilliant thus far.
I like basketball also but the NBA playoffs are a drop in the bucket compared to the world cup. There are soccer rivalrys dating back to the late 1800's to early 1900's, so this decades of rivalry in the NBA just dont jive. And not to sound ignorant, but North Americas conquest of sports such as Hockey and basketball are pretty much done. There are players in Europe that are just as good if not better. Spain is a powerhouse in Basketball, and so is Russia, Slovakia and Sweden, etc in hockey and getting stronger and stronger as years go by. Even Kobe Bryant played in Italy and speaks fluent Italian.

God Bless......Andy

Lional Messi is un-be-fuckin-liev-able. I heard he is the highest paid athlete in the world right now. Something like over 100 mil. per year. Topped Tiger, Beckham, Rinaldo, etc, and he is only 22 or so.

God Bless.............Andy

Trivia: The most popular sport in China is basketball. Over 300 million Chinese basketball fans - that's more than every man, woman, and child in all of America.

How can 300 million Chinese be wrong?

Tee OH!
The problem with the sport is that it lacks honour and plenty of the games are decided by officiating. With such low scoring games, referee decisions like red cards or penalties in the box decides games. It doesn't help that most of these players (even the very skilled ones) are whining for penalties and influencing referee decisions with diving.
When it comes to penalty shots in the elimination round to decide who goes on and who doesn't, I'd say that luck plays a bigger part than skill when it comes to scoring. On a good day, even I could go 3 for 3 on a goalie if I was lucky. The biggest trophy in all of soccer can be decided on penalty shots, and that country is seen as the best in the world - LOL - What a joke. Remember when Greece beat Portugal in 2004 to win the Euro with a corner kick?

I love playing soccer and I appreciate the skill, endurance and athleticism that these athletes endure. It's a great team game where execution of a game plan by skilled players should decide who's the better team. It's a shame that the game is ruled by officials and old fashioned rules.
