Nice classics list. Could maybe add the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)

Contemporary: Agree with what everyone has posted so far but want to add a couple early Spielberg efforts, Close Encounters and E.T.

Does Time Bandits qualify as Sci Fi? Either way, loved it too.

Plan 9 from outer space was hilarious, even though it wasn't meant to be. A classic Ed Wood film.

I get around.
I guess a spoof also passes for a sci fi movie.

Similarly Galaxy Quest is a funny riff on Star Trek.

I've been enjoying recent non-Hollywood scifi movies that have low budgets but compelling ideas and speculation:

Primer - time travel is easy. Life, not so much.

The Nine Lives of Tomas Katz - is it the end of the world or just an idea.
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kebvfI7tcw

The American Astronaut - singing, dancing, space travel...funny and strange
trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uujG1ADn2zk

Eden Log - very well done French movie. A man wakes up underground and has to figure out what is going on.

Paranoia 1.0 - are you already infected?

Didn't care for the remake of The Time Machine. I like the original with Rod Taylor.

hard to believe no one put running man on this list yet.
Someone once told me if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all.

Running Man.......
