Nice classics list. Could maybe add the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)
Contemporary: Agree with what everyone has posted so far but want to add a couple early Spielberg efforts, Close Encounters and E.T.
Does Time Bandits qualify as Sci Fi? Either way, loved it too.

Plan 9 from outer space was hilarious, even though it wasn't meant to be. A classic Ed Wood film.Plan 9 From Outer Space

Similarly Galaxy Quest is a funny riff on Star Trek.I guess a spoof also passes for a sci fi movie.
The original blade runner, Alien trilogy (not the alien vs. predator shit), terminator 2, Enemy Mine (Dennis Quaid), Time Machine (Guy Pierce), Flash Gordon, Soldiers (Kurt Russel), Pitch Black (Vin Diesel), Fifth Element (Bruce Willis) Now if only they can make Starcraft into a Movie...
Someone once told me if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all.hard to believe no one put running man on this list yet.
