I always preferred Lee Van Cleef. Sorry I'm being a smartass. But yes, you're right. I loved his sneer.

So many good ones...does the big flaming eye in LOTR count? :D

I vote for Hans Gruber in Die Hard!!!
Alan Rickman makes a great bad guy. He's still doing it in the Harry Potter movies.

Love that guy -- had the two best lines in the movie "bitches leave" when he goes in to waste the coke head and "know how to fly, bobby" when he tosses one of his buds onto the roof of Robo's car.

He's often confused with canada's michael ironside (who is one of the signifiers in the "you know you're watching a bad movie when....")

That's Kurtwood Smith. He was awesome as Clarence Boddicker. He just has that unfriendly, 'asshole' look to him- perfect for playing any villain.

How true -- my all-time favourite Western villian. Loved him in those muffler commercials.
Jack Palance was also a pretty good villian in the oaters, like Shane and others...

Robert Mitchum in the original Cape Fear -- did the same kind of menace as DeNiro without the hammy overkill. Also Michum was good in "Night of the Hunter" -- but one of the best bad guy's was Andy Griffith in "Face in the Crowd" where he played a womanizing. almost demonically possessed politician.

If you liked Joe Pesci's maniacal Tommy in "Goodfellas", check out the crazy Richard Widmark in 1947's film noir classic "Kiss Of Death", when he pushes the old woman in a wheelchair down a flight of stairs.

ah now we're getting into the fun stuff. Kiss of Death will be released on DVD in October.

Another classic bad guy performance was tyrone power (his one bad guy role) in "nightmare alley" -- which has just been released after years and years of being tied up in legalities. He's great -- not maniacal -- just quietly manipulately evil.

He was never allowed to play a bad guy again -- kind of like andy griffith who had shot "andy of mayberry" at the same time he made "face in the crowd". After mayberry hit, griffith played very few bad guys but when he did he had a great 'aw shucks, i'm jess gonna fuck you with a little" quality that made him pretty scarey.
