Gilles was a true racer in every sense, what he went through to get to F1 was amazing.

If you ever get a chance to read the biography of Prof Sid Watkins do it, he was involved with or responsible for a ton of the safety initiatives taken in the 70s to the 90s.

There is a story in the book about getting a ride from Gilles, to the airport after a race if I recall correctly. Prof Sid, Gilles and Gilles wife Joann are at the rental car and Watkins goes to get in the back, Joann tells him no you sit in the front with Gilles and proceeds to get in the back seat but down on the floor and covers her head with her arms. Watkins comments that it’s the weirdest thing he’s seen, until 5 minutes into the drive Gilles has frightened him so badly with his driving he’s wishing he was hiding in the back as well.

Gilles was caught going 100 kph above the speed limit on an Italian expressway. The cop asked to see his driver's license. Gilles showed him his F1 super license, and got off with a warning.

Gilles was Guest of Honour at the Sports Celebrity Dinner in Montreal in 1980. The banquet was about to start, and Gilles was nowhere to be seen. Gossip started to float that he had more important things to do, and had snubbed the event. He arrived twenty minutes late, apologized for his tardiness, and the fundraiser began. Later people found out that he had been tire testing at Fiorano that afternoon, then he took a charter flight to Paris, and from there, to Mirabel on the Concorde. Departure from the plane was delayed an hour because of some technical problem. Otherwise, he would have been a little bit early.

Not the complete race, but an hour of the best parts. This is my own .mpg rip from VHS tape. Back in 1989, F1 was still being broadcast in Canada the following weekend, in edited form. Approximately 600 MB This race has more action than some full seasons. Commentary by Murray Walker and James Hunt. I'll be uploading the 1985 Australian Grand Prix another time.

1984 Monaco Grand Prix

This is the full race, (stopped shortly after half distance), with English commentary. This was the first time that Ayrton Senna showed his brilliance, in the Toleman-Hart, taking second place controversially, as Jacky Ickx dropped the red flag while Senna was catching Prost. The real star of this race, however, and he gets a lot of airtime, is third place finisher Stefan Bellof in the Cosworth Tyrell, from last on the grid of 20 cars. Tragically, Bellof was killed the following year in a WSC race at Spa. Late in the race, he makes an unbelievable pass on Arnoux at Mirabeau, putting two wheels over the curb, in pouring rain.

This is a FOCA production, and possibly not the telecast version. I have a better copy on an external drive that needs some maintenance, so I hope to upgrade this one eventually. The video quality is perhaps marginally better than 1979 France and 1981 Spain.

"Jack Hahn" is a fictional character. I get 15 GB of online storage for each e-mail address I use, and several will never be used for anything else.

At the 1985 Canadian Grand Prix, Elio de Angelis won pole position, then he went into the crowd to watch the Formula Atlantic race. He was still wearing his racing overalls, unzipped to the waist. Not too many F1 drivers mingle with 'the great unwashed'. I spoke to him, and shook his hand.

I had a seat in the grandstand at the approach to the hairpin. In those days, that was still wooden benches built on scaffolding. During qualifying, a groundhog came out on the track, about fifteen feet from the hairpin. Every few minutes, he'd move a few feet, but he stayed on the track. At one point, two cars went by, about three feet apart, with the groundhog in between. The front page of the next day's Le Journal de Montreal had a picture of de Angelis' Lotus, with the groundhog about a foot away from one of the front tires. The headline, translated into English, was "Best Seat in the House".

2005 Japanese Grand Prix, Suzuka

Excellent video quality, commentary in Spanish. This is perhaps Kimi Raikonen's finest hour, as he worked his way through the field from 17th on the grid to win both the race and the Constructpor's Cup, for McLaren-Mercedes. 691 MB, Xvid .avi file type.
