This year BYD is putting Sodium ion batteries in all their EVs. They have abandoned the Lithium ion battery. BYD is shipping some to Canada. Right now Big OIL and Detroit got them banned for sale in the USA. Sodium ion batteries retail 90% of their charge in 0 degree weather! This changes everything. Sodium ion batteries made from salt, are cheaper, charge in less than an hour, more than double battery driving range and can last ~ 30 years!

I have a 2015 EV that is built on probably 2009 state of the art. There are a few people with 400K km on this car with 80% battery capacity left.

Keeping an eye on the new Toyota and Subaru EV's. The prices seem reasonable but interested in mechanical/electrical/software issues people tend to run into after a few years and the repair/service experience.

I'm on my second EV. Lease them for 3 yrs because I want the latest tech improvements that are rapidly ongoing. The only required maintenance is tire rotations every 7,500 miles. Any repair/service experience needed is covered by OEM bumper to bumper warranty. The little service needed for that was excellent.

To date after ~4½ yrs have saved ~$8,500 and counting, by not needing any gasoline, oil changes, anti-freeze anymore. That's money put in my pockets and not BIG Oil! I will never go back to ICE vehicles.

You in Canada are lucky since you can now buy EVs from China that are years ahead of all other countries in EV development and cost far less! BIG Oil and Detroit got China EVs banned from sale in the USA.

FWIW all service/repairs after OEM bumper to bumper warranty expires on ICE and EVs are very expensive now. Used to do all minor and medium repairs myself in the past and saved a bundle. All new vehicles regardless if ICE or EV are built to make DIY repair more difficult than it was in the past.

As always: Depends. Cottage country and back? Yes. From Vanouver to St. Johns? Rent a car for that one.

BYD the biggest EV auto company in the world dumped Lithium-ion batteries and puts Sodium-ion batteries in their EVs this year. CATL Sodium-ion batteries are far superior. Sodium ion batteries made from Salt, costs far less to make, get 930 miles of range per charge, charge in less than an hour, retains 90% of charge at 0° Fahrenheit and are rated to last ~25-30 years. If they are available to buy in Canada this is the one you want.

i knew their batteries were really good but i had no idea they switched to new ones that were even better, that's really tempting

Thats like 4 years ago. Charging speeds are much higher now. It all depends on how many KM you wanna do in a day.

Yeah the sodium ion stuff is interesting but a lot of those numbers sound pretty hyped up. CATL has one in a car now that does better in the cold but the range is still nothing crazy. BYD seems more focused on the storage side for now. Be cool if it gets cheaper and holds up better in winter though.

depends where you are - ontario? any current EV such as a Tesla will be fine in winter even on the few cold stretches we get that go down to -30. Keep it in your garage and you're laughing, keep it outside and youll cry.

Sodium ion is coming here with the chinese cars, and the chinese cars are very advanced but their ecosystem is aweful and the software is questionable. Chinese made Teslas and others are coming in with greater supply - the issue friends is the grid, the home charging grid will saturate and we don't have a path to greater power generation till a decade out.

Also, for city driving it seems EVs work really well. Not sure how well they work in rural or off road situations.

crazy advancements in electric cars, man, it's pretty damn impressive especially since that's only 4 years ago
Yes we hear a lot about batteries, but the advancement in motor tech is mind blowing as well. We have been using electric motors for a very long time in so many areas, so I am astounded at the massive, mindblowing leaps we are now making. WTF were they doing all those past decades lol. Control systems are also advancing. High power MOSFETS have gone from the size of a dime to the size of a grain of rice for example. 🤯

I think there is plenty of power available in the grid or at home especially during off programmed peakhours.
