sports is the ultimate meritocracy it doesnt matter your race, religion, nationality etc as long as you get the job done you are hired, having said that I find it hard that in a nation of 50 million they couldnt come up with a decent manager and had to hire a foreigner who is gonna jump ship in a few months anyway

Esco,

They can't all suck. I tend to agree with soucer1...there has got to be a good manager somewhere in that country of 50 million.

One more thing, if you are going to get a soccer manager at least get one that is from a country where the soccer quality is equal to or better than your own.

England should get on their knees and beg Jose Mourinho to coach.

yeah too bad the jerk store called and said they are all out of him!!! this man just drips of arrogance, cant stand him, right down to his sharp suits and that hair, but hey what other manager has one a UEFA and a Champions League back to back with a team that wasnt even that great

Since the 1966 World Cup, the best England have done was finishing 4th in 1990. I'm not sure if it all comes down to coaching, but looking at the current lineup of coaches in the top teams of the EPL, none of them are local boys:

Chelsea - Portuguese
Man Utd - Scottish
Liverpool - Spanish
Tottenham - Dutch
Arsenal - French

So, I would have to say that England does have an issue with finding decent local-boys. Then again, they are nowhere as bad as the Spaniards. It doesn't have to be a person with a lot of coaching experience. Juergen Klinsman has done a decent job for Germany so far.

Juergen Klinsman has done nothing yet germany already got to the world cup as hostand has only played warmup matches, plus i really think they could flop with to much on ballacks back to carry.

as for Brazil well they have an awesome side based on a huge population that is obsessed with soccer, what bothers me is the band wagon effect that happens in TO where people with zero links to Brazil or my personal favorites are the guys with a Portuguese and a Brazilian flag on the car hmmm ya might wanna read some history homey the Brazilians werent really crazy about the Portuguese ruling them hmmm
I've always hoped for a Brazil-Portugal matchup in the WC just to see what these guys would do. It might really screw them up.

In a way, it's unfair for Brazil to compete against almost every other country. First, they have almost 200,000,000 people. Second, almost everyone plays from the time they start walking, and Third - the second most popular sport is so far behind soccer, soccer never loses athletes to another sport. In Canadian terms, guys like Steve Nash would have give up basketball in high school to focus on soccer.

Well I'm Greek and I've played pro football in Greece during my younger years. Nothing pleased me more than watching the greeks cinderella run in 2004. I agree wth most people the Greeks were one hit wonders and I'll continue to say this to all my friends. It was however great to watch but bottom line is that although they have a great defense they have absolutley no offense and this will always be there downfall.

ah not difficult to have a winning record when you have played them a total of 3 times at the A level and one of those was a tie, try being Bolivia or Ecuador and having to play them constantly and see what happens

thanks for the link Esco its very interesting to do a side by side comparison of countries

on a side note does Heather Locklear just keep getting better looking as she gets older or what

MILF Numero Uno

BTW...I've been consulting my BBC WC Wallchart

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/world_cup_2006/4510476.stm

And Italy had better win their group or they will almostly certainly have to face Brazil.
Brazil have Japan, Croatia and the Aussies in their group, not exactly world class teams.
They shouldnt have too many problems winning that group me thinks.

Assuming Italy make the 2nd round they may have to face Brazil.......boy will that be
an interesting match-up

Hiddink has been seriously mentioned also.

Not sure if he'd be right though, he tends to do better with rebuilding and underdog teams
