Does anyone still use a 35mm film camera?

Nikon uses .NIF (Nikon Image Format).
.
Not to be anal, but it's actually NEF - Nikon Electronic Format .....I know I'm being anal!

Everything you said in your post makes sense...I shoot RAW but output Tiffs and Jpegs...NEVER RAW

True words. This implies a discipline that we should all aspire to when preserving an image for posterity. Once we learn the basics of photography, it becomes easier to do for every shot.
Yes, exactly...that is the key here. The more you shoot and have feeback on photos (from clients or friends that know photography..NOT Mom) the quicker you can look around the viewfinder ( and know what you're looking for) before you press the shutter. BUT, I believe that ONLY comes with shooting and analyzing the results, not by having your camera sit in a drawer with summer vacation pics on the same card (or roll of film) as your Christmas vacations.:)

Lol - you are right, it is NEF. That wasn't a typo on my part I must have at some point got it into my head that it was NIF and never thought about it again lol. Yes, it is NEF. I corrected my post. ;)

Digital is dream for us professional photographers because it reduces the work flow and deliver images to our clients faster than ever.
Funny I found the opposite.
I shot film dropped it off at printers, went for a beer on a patio , picked up prints and delivered.
Now shoot, download, colour correct, tone, correct skin flaws ( because they expect it), burn to disk and ouput..no sitting on patio but sitting at computer!

I bet a GOOD photog with a simple "point and shoot" could out shoot a BAD photog with 2 D3's and 6 lenses. Easily!
Clearly, but then an average photog with a D3, awesome lens and some practice...... that's where I am.....

I also love the insane ISO on the D3s - took a pic of my xmas tree in a dark room at night and it looked like it was flashed...... night vision indeed.

I have seen a shot of a person under a street lamp at night shot on a D3 at 25,600 "iso"..very passable!

I just priced a Nikon D3 at $4,000. That is double the price of a Nikon D300. Do the pros shoot with a D3 for a living?
There are two digital sensor formats - DX and FX.

The DX image sensor (replaces film at the risk of insulting you) is smaller than a 35mm frame - thus it crops the image and light recorded by 1.5. This means a 50mm 1.4 lens (a very nice lens btw) is really a 75mm 2.8 lens on a DX camera. This means it's both darker and longer... if that makes any sense.

An FX sensor is the same size as a frame of 35mm film thus a 50mm 1.4 lens is a 50mm 1.4 lens.

The D300 is a 12mp DX camera, the D3 (and the new D3s that I have) are 12 mp FX cameras.

There are a couple of advantages to FX cameras:

- Lenses are brighter on them - remember photograpy is all about light, and thus there are more options in exposing a picture
- The sensors record higher quality images at high ISO (the above example of a passable photo at 25,600 ISO is insanely high - photos on my SOs D300 at 6,400 are VERY grainy.

Another consideration to digital photograpy is that cameras are rated for a number of exposures before they will fail. The D3 is a professional camera and has several advantages:

- it is rated for double the exposures as a D300, which means that in the world of high volume digital photography you'll have two buy two D300s to last as long as a D3
- it is sealed against the elements (thus it doesn't have an integrated flash)
- it has a battery that's rated at 4,000 pictures
- it has dual memory slots (I have two 16gb cards in mine) so it can record an insane number of high-res photos before it needs to be downloaded
- the sensor produces noticeably better images (I own both cameras)
- it's rated at 9 frames per second vs 3 fps - which for fast moving sports is awesome

The downsides of the D3 (and D3s) are that's it's large, heavy and expensive - if you can deal with these three then you're off to the races to buy some very expensive glass to put in front of that world class camera.

When film was the rule, I had an opportunity to use Fim stock to take some very interesting images around TO. If my memory serves me right it required special processing but had an effective ISO of 128000 and also had fun with infra-red, a very erie set of images. As far as I know unless you modify digital cameras you can't take images as if there were IR and the modification is permanent, The images were very icy grey and quite beautiful.

Exactly..but you can get an old D70 for next to nothing and have it converted for IR. IR is something like a Fish Eye lens though, "easy to use, difficult to use effectively"
