Does it mean that we will have to take dozens if not hundreds vaccines?
Hopefully not. McMaster University is developing a vaccine that can be inhaled and that is engineered to protect against a broader spectrum of variants:
“We’ve been referring to these as ‘second-generation vaccines’ because unlike the first vaccines (Moderna, Pfizer), they don’t simply include the spike protein that they all have, which can change with some of these variants,” said Brian Lichty, a professor with the McMaster Immunology Research Centre and co-leader of the vaccine development project.
“We have included some other coronaviral genes that causes COVID. The thinking being this will give a broader, more natural sort of immunity that may give some level of protection against variants as they arise and potentially against future pandemic coronaviruses.”
McMaster University is working on its own COVID-19 vaccine.
