It's pretty simple.

-good albums/songs over the span of decades
-pushed the door open on MTV and evolved lockstep with it. It is what it is today because of Jackson
-instrumental in increased racial harmony, awareness
-was a catalyst for entire genres of music, dance, and styles
-influenced tons of artists
-was exciting stage presence only comparable to Elvis
-charitable
-even though he was on top of the world, he was likable because he had a meek personality; no ego at all.
Musicians on this board must be busting a but at this!

Thanx for proving my point.

Done now enjoy your life lmao!!

way out in left field
Well, one thing you have to give to MJ: he did last a long time musically. I mean even if he was basically a slave to his father when he started out when he was....8 (???)....he was famous then. 42 yrs is a long time in any career (especially musically).

One thing that IS different about the "super stars" of today, is they are all manufactured. Meaning they are so so talentwise yet with big business backing, the best lighting, the best promotion, the best hype, and the best backup vocalists/musicians, just about anyone can be a superstar. People these days (kids) will gobble up anything they are told to.

I mean Milli Vanilli got ostracized for lip synching and both Madonna and Britney Spears have both been caught doing it and what happened? SFA.

I agree, I don't think there will be any superstars like MJ, really talented people tend to not fit into the "mold" that big business wants to sell....

You mean wannabe musicians who have no talent. Nobody cares what they think.

If you like melody, you like Jackson's music.

You're not comparing Milli Vanilli who didn't actually sing their own songs live nor in the studio with Spears and Madonna who do sing there own songs but sometimes lip-synch while performing live?

Lmao like I said folks a joke.
Cut your hair and stop living in your 'teenage angst' stage. Grow up.

Jackson is and will always be more in the music world than you and all your buddies in the "underground metal scene" put together.

Why? Because his material is superior.

Jackson is a music icon even if you don't like his music. You have to respect him for what he was - a music genius with the ability to sync his music with dance. Yes, his personal life was weird and but not too many people don't move their head or feet when they hear a Jackson tune.

MJ is great for many reasons. Most of those here who don't like him don't like his genre of music. Howevere, let's face it. The guy is the ultimate entertainer. He whole act was unbelieveable. The guy's music crosses so many genres and generations, you can't deny his fame. Not only did this guy give MTV a great boost, but without him we wouldn't have MuchMusic or BET. I agree that most of the acts today are 'manufactured' and that just gives more credence to Jackson's work. Although it 'cheapens' the whole industry, the entire industry is trying to model groups to be the Jackson 5 or MJ. They want them to sing and dance (sorry to the musicians who believe that you have to play an instrument to be an artist... you don't) and they're so concerned with that image that they 'fix' the singing part. The music of today is more concerned with how many ringtones they can sell.
All that aside, we're talking about a man that made at least four albums that 90% of artists would kill to have one of. The fact that the OP used the word 'phenomenon' says alot. He, and many others, may not understand, but they at least acknowledge that he just that. A Phenomenon.

Oh, add songwriter to that list of accomplishments. Rather than singing about how pissed off he is at the world, like Hadrian's buddies who sing about blood, death, ghouls and gobblins and other childish garbage (like just "rockin' out!" while throwing up bull horns), Jackson was an actual songwriter. You know, music with a real message.

Thanks.

Plato is to Philosophy as Jackson is to music.
