The problem is that the highlighted comment is "urban myth," there is no empirical evidence which shows that sexual assaults at Universities are any more acceptable now than it was in 1920 or that instances of sex crimes by University students against other University students has exponentially increased over the past half-century.
No. The problem is that people think "nothing has changed since 1920" is actually somehow a good thing when we are talking about attitudes towards women and sexual consent.

With the two exceptions of spousal rape, and that in 1920 not saying no meant yes what do you believe was different in 1920 in terms of a) acceptability of sex crimes b) refusal of consent was refusal of consent, from today?

I'm willing to give these kids the benefit of the doubt.

At most they should be made aware that their comments were inappropriate for a public forum like Facebook and smarten up.

I remember when I was in university quite well. Your hormones are raging and all you think about is sex and you're 20 years old. They're kids dammit.

According to the Globe and Mail, the University is considering expelling them.

Supposedly for the crime of using words like "sport sex" and "hate sex". This is just absurd. Perhaps instead of "sport sex" they had used the feminist approved term "friends with benefits " they would have been ok, and instead of "hate sex" the feminist approved " make-up sex".

I'm glad I went to university in the late 80s before Facebook or cell phones existed. I'm sure my stupid mouth would have gotten me in trouble otherwise. And back then, no one joked about rape and no one committed rape. I refuse to believe that young men are going to university now and raping away.

Expelling them would likely ruin their career and/or life. Based I saw, it was essentially "lockerroom" trash talk that they foolishly posted on Facebook.

If the allegations are true, then what they did was wrong and should face the consequences.
I mean if the language was not targeted towards these women but were based on other factors (e.g. race, sexual orientation or even "against johns" because they see SPs or them itself) then everyone here would be upset and calling it wrong. Yes it may have been done in the lockerroom but it's up to people to stand up for others when you see something wrong.

But what "consequences" would they face if they were already practicing dentists? Have any provisions of the Criminal Code been violated?

Lol this has nothing to do with the criminal code. Universities have established student code of conduct that students agree to abide by as part of enrolling in the program. Similar to companies having harassment policies in the workplace that employees are expected to follow. This is a violation of that code. No one here is talking about the criminal code.

But where is the due process? In any English Common Law Country should we be merely rolling over and playing dead about this sort of blatant violation of due process?

Would you be so - oh there's a student code of conduct, if your employer violated due process in this same way?

Kids? Fourth year university students are hardly kids. 20 year olds are not kids. These are adults. Representing their school in a Facebook group. Dumb as fucking dirt.
True but if there was a facebook group Canadian lawyers for BDSM or American dentists for kinky sex would any of us (save for Joy Smith) be supporting a witch hunt for the members of the group?

I think there have been cases where a court of competent jurisdiction have overturned decisions by employers, tribunals, commissions, etc. Employers, universities, tribunals, commissions, etc. are not above the law. Unjust punishment is unjust and will most likely be overturned by a real court.

You mean if these imaginary people were discussing the finer points of chloroforming and raping some woman they sat beside in class? No, there wouldn't be a witch hunt. But there isn't one now, either, since it is inaccurate to call egregious fuckwits facing consequences for their egregious fuckwittedness a "witch hunt".

What due process has been violated? Where did that even come from?
They have not been suspended yet and neither have they been named in the press. So what due process has been violated? Are their pictures or names in the media? The only comments that are publicly available are what THEY posted online on Facebook for the whole world to see. Are you going to blame Facebook for that?
In terms of courts overturning it, they have in some instances and others stuck with it like the high school who couldn't receive his private school diploma for smoking weed in his dorm. Either way, the comments were inappropriate regardless what is the just punishment for it.

If you took pictures of female coworkers and talked about raping them, I am pretty sure your employer would consider taking action against you. If not, then you should let us know where you work so we can stop doing business with that company.

Are all 13 equally guilty? Did they all make the same posts?

We are one step closer to having to deal with the "thought police".

The right thing here is for them to face a suspension for a semester and then be readmitted only after completing some counseling sessions. They might have been joking. Or at least, some of them might have. No point to ruin the rest of their lives if they haven't actually hurt anyone, just insensitive and stupid online behavior, but there is a lesson they need to learn and it needs to be taught.

I agree.

They were trash talking and they are a bunch of dumb kids.

I'm sure that there are a lot of people who would take a great deal of joy in seeing them expelled from University however, I feel that that sort of punishment would be far too excessive for what they have done.

And it is worth noting that not all 12 are equally guilty.

If I was punished every time I said something stupid I'd be in jail for life.

Every time I drive onto the parking lot at Pearson airport I say aloud,"the guy who designed this parking lot should be shot". Doesn't mean I really mean it.
