its kinda obvious that there is an issue over and above the normal seasonal flu, when you see arm trucks hauling away dead bodies. I guess the same images have to occur in your home nation before you start believing its true.
Exactly. Up until December, COVID-19 was only found in some animals. Then, without warning, the virus mutated and humans began getting infected. By January, the virus once again mutated and healthcare practitioners and scientists found themselves dealing with two separate strains. Humans have, over time, built up antibodies to several strains of the flu, which is the reason why COVID-19 is not "just another flu". Yes, many people still die from the flu but there is SOME protection from it in the form of vaccines and the antibodies we naturally carry.

For COVID-19 there is nothing that protects us at the moment, which is why isolation and social distancing, if we must leave our homes, is crucial at this time.

A Real Stat

There is still about 1/3 of the day to go, but the number of deaths in the states is up approx. 40% today, from 1,100+ to 1,500+

It is possible that by the end of tomorrow, the number of deaths will have DOUBLED in 2 days.

Yup. I also wonder how many Americans are not seeking treatment simply because they're uninsured and cannot afford to go to hospital or a clinic? Canada's health system is not perfect, but damn, I am glad we have a universal care service that everyone can access.

No you don't understand. 90% is older than 70 included the 10% who is older than 90. It's simple math. The first number is true and the second number is true. The less 10% is younger than 70 many of them with chronic illnesses. In your reading 100% of the dead people are older than 70 what is not true, and the article never said that.
The article is so poorly written. After all it's headliner is "Swedish Propoganda Research".
I lost interest as soon as I read that and then reading that stat as they are trying to make it look all 100% are over the age of 70 which is not true. But the exact number is not 90% I checked.

I also loved how the title said real stats. Just seeing that made me immediately suspicious.
The problem with these uneducated conspiracy theory peddlers is when they start searching and reading these propoganda websites or articles they get more and more looney tune websites recommended to them.
Google algorithms doing a great job.

The USA was at 1295 yesterday, over 400 added to the death toll today.

So approx 0.0005% of the population. Is that like getting hit by lightning or winning the powerball lottery?

That same idiotic argument. Is that the final number? Is that where it's going to stay, no more deaths? It's like saying Nate Pearson is great, he's pitching a perfect game. Nobody can get a hit off him. And that's after 1 batter. Do you see how dumb that is?

It will be 2,000 deaths after tomorrow. If it continues to go up 40% a day, like it did today, in 2 weeks it will be 64,000 and in 3 weeks it will be 250,000. What are you going to say then? It's mostly old people so who gives a fuck? They don't count anyway.

I don't know the final tally. Rough estimate is 10 times flu deaths?

Those with immunity will go on and strengthen the human race.

Well, when you know the final tally, then you can do your calculations and determine how impactful the virus was. Until then, the numbers are meaningless aside from assessing how the virus is progressing on a daily or weekly basis.

In order to see how serious COVID-19 is, all you have to do is look at how the number of confirmed cases in Canada has grown since 1st March when there were 24 confirmed infections in Canada. Exactly four weeks later, there are about 4,800 confirmed cases in Canada. Scientists still believe we are weeks away from the peak before it levels off, so, all things being equal, we're going to see a huge spike between now and May.

With all due respect to posters with alternate opinions, this is nothing to be downplayed.

It's not just the death toll that should be of concern to people, the long term effects of the virus on people is for the large part unknown.

The lungs getting damaged from this virus is not something anyone should take lightly, specially those young people that keep touting I will not die from this since I am younger and are apathetic about the virus. If you get this virus and live, and have any sort of common sense you understand the issues you could face with lung problems as you age and go over 50 years old.

Yesterday, the US reached a critical milestone: it became the first country to record more than 100,000 cases of COVID-19, the illness caused by the novel coronavirus.

Though more people were almost certainly infected in China - epidemiologists have estimated that hundreds of thousands were likely infected in Wuhan alone - the surge in America's testing capacity, something that's only going to continue to improve thanks to a slate of new rapid-response tests are hitting the market, means the US will almost certainly record the largest number of infected patients going forward.

Already, the global total of confirmed cases surpassed 600,000 overnight, thanks mostly to the US, though Spain and Italy also reported large numbers of new cases and deaths reaffirming that the lockdowns in each of their respective countries are far from over.

A chart produced by the New York Times and published last night sparked a heated debate online as journalists, scientists and other wannabe 'experts' weighed in on the possibility that the outbreaks in New York City, Detroit and New Orleans might be more severe than what Italy has seen in Lombardy.
https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/03/27/upshot/coronavirus-new-york-comparison.html

Meanwhile, Spain recorded its deadliest day so far, but new infections are slowing after two weeks of lockdown. The Spanish Health Ministry reported 832 new deaths, bringing the country's death toll to 5,690 as of early Saturday, a 17% jump. The number of confirmed cases climbed to 72,248 from 64,059. Spain now has the second-highest number of deaths, outside of Italy.

The curve is still sharply sloping up. So for the downplayers, quoting current totals as a fixed in time entity, when there appears to be so much more bad results coming, as proof that the virus is affecting a miniscule fraction of the population is idiotic, moronic, insipid and whatever else Roget's deems appropriate.

If you guys don't want to believe it, that's fine, but don't post bullshit to try and convince us of your denier agenda. It is disingenuous at best and harmful at worst.

Singapore To Jail People For 6 Months For Standing Too Close To Strangers

Singapore is set to punish people who stand too close to strangers with 6 months in prison as the true scope of “social distancing” measures begins to be felt around the world.

According to a press release from the country’s Ministry of Health, Singaporeans who fail to maintain a distance of one meter from other people during “non-transient” public interactions can be fined 10,000 Singapore dollars ($6,985) or hit with 6 months in jail.

The measure is obviously designed to target groups of people who congregate or people who visit their friends and relatives.

As the resentment of being forced to live under quarantine lockdown for weeks and possibly months builds, authorities across the world are undoubtedly going to face a growing backlash from the citizenry, no matter how bad the spread of coronavirus.

In France, a 35-year-old man was sent to prison after repeatedly violating lockdown measures after being found guilty of “endangering the lives of others.”

Another 19-year-old man was handed a 4 month suspended prison sentence for repeatedly flouting the measures 10 times in just a few days.

In Jordan, authorities initially banned everyone from going outside, even to buy food, leading to the arrest of 800 people.

More than 90,000 Italians have also been hit with fines for violating quarantine while transgressors in Spain can face up to 18 months in prison.

One police force in the UK is using drone surveillance technology to spy on people who walk their dogs in remote areas and then track down their home address. https://summit.news/2020/03/26/uk-police-force-slammed-for-spying-on-dog-walkers-with-drone/

Meanwhile, in “troubled” areas of European cities such as Seine-Saint-Denis in Paris, migrants are virtually immune from quarantine measures because large groups of them intimidate police if they try to enforce them.

“We are not going to give up. But we also know where these people live and how they live. Strict containment, for them, is just impossible,” a police officer working in the area said.

It is already over 2,000 now. That is basically a doubling in about 48 hours.
