Tonight I walked to my bank to get some money from the bank machine. My branch was open but I prefer the machines for just a withdrawal.
The bank has 2 machines in the lobby. When I went in 2 ladies were using the machines and another gentleman was waiting.
The 1 lady left the machine and went inside to see a teller. The other guy looked at me with eyes wide open and I looked at the machine and gave him the same look back.
I said to him " did she leave her account page open"? He said " I think so". AT the same time the other lady finished and left the bank.
The other guy walked up to the other machine and I walked up to the machine that had the account page left open.
The screen read " what would you like to deposit. Cheque , cash." I couldn't believe she didn't close it out and get her card back.
I hit the cancel button and then pushed the button to return card which closes out any transactions.
Grab the card and went into the bank and told the lady what she did. She thanked me and I told her "someone could have drain alot of money from your account". She thanked me again.

Now I know these machines have cameras and I would have been identified pretty quick if I would have said " fuck it, lets get some free cash". Also I used the same machine as she did so another easy catch for cops.
But that's not me and I could never do that to someone.
So, remember to close out your account page and get your card back.

I never dared use a bank machine when I use to frequent NYC. There were always sketchy characters hanging around. I tend to avoid outside bank machines in Toronto as well to withdraw cash.

I haven't used a bank machine since it's TD stopped paying $5 for using them. They Make the make tons of money hence the record profits. They used to share it by A. not Charging any fees at all for using the machines. b Actually paying you to use the machine.

Plus I've never see people check for the card copy of device that Many machines have. I used to complain about it and eventually they put that plastic shield to make it harder to use the device but that took 5 years People like me bitching. The fact that they can fire so many people Is just too much of a savings to the bank to worry How about fraud and Id theft.

Put back to the main story you were hero. Great job.

Only time i go to the bank machine is for this hobby. Aside from that, i have the same $50 in my wallet for the last 3 months, everything is on my C.C.
Another thing i never understood is why people use their debit cards?

. How many people cannot get credit cards. Prepaid credit cards are worse than debit cards Service representative fee wise. Almost anyone can get a debit card. Credit card people do not like people who pay cash.

I often use cash at restaurants and small businesses because a lot of them like cash so they can pay a little less taxes.
Some offer discounts for cash, like 10%, which is way more than any credit card reward.

Plus I always like to have cash on me and at home just in case there is a problem with Rogers, Interac, or power.

Same…. I’m sitting with the same $180 that I’ve had in my wallet since late June. Can’t seem to line up an SP visit.

ATMs used to give you your cash first and then your card back. I guess people were leaving the cards behind so now they give you your card first and then the cash. Which means I sometimes forget to take the cash. The first time this happened, the bank said their cameras show that the cash fell on the ground. I asked well then who picked it up, and were they dumb enough to do another transaction so you can figure out who they are? They didn’t answer me or want to show me the video footage. I fought with them for months before they agreed to credits my account for it. The second time the cash retracted back into the machine ans my account was automatically credited.

I have zero desire to get too much into nitty gritties. So what follows is brush strokes per se.

Not all banks do it that way. Some or many, will do X, Y, Z…then spit out the card, close, then cash. Many do the opposite and stupid way. Many people will forget their cards, but rarely, very rarely the reason they are at an ATM. To get cash…

Video footage.
Yes they have it. Not really admissible in court.

You can have them investigate, you can get time stamps and video with time stamps. That show you at the machine doing X or Y. And the time stamps of those transactions. Then walking away, leaving your card. And the person behind you cleaning everything out until daily limits are hit….

If they credited you back, consider that customer service and yourself lucky..

If you leave the front door to your house wide open and someone steals this or that……if you leave the keys in your car and someone steals this or that…or your car.

My advice.
Keep all limits, daily limits small. If you use debit machines, keep the limit on it, and a specific account and the balance in it small. Even if that means you transfer money into it, more often.

If your card is lost or stolen, and someone goes on a tap spree. The daily limit gets hit or insufficient funds…And you aren’t fighting for months over hundreds of dollars.

Watched this a few years ago. I bought a lottery ticket on a debit card once for $6.00. Checked my bank account online about a week after and saw a debit for $600.00. Phoned the bank and they identified the transaction as a lottery purchase but said there was nothing they could do about it because it was a debit card. If it had been a credit card they could chase it down. Luckily, I knew the vendor because I used to buy a ticket a week. He had the money in a brown envelope for me. We knew each other for years. Wearing latex gloves during covid made it easy to fumble and punch in the number wrong.
Point being. If it's a credit card, it is the bank's money. They have the infrastructure and motivation to go after it. If you use a debit card it is your money and it is gone with no resource other than you to reclaim it.
That being said, I still use a debit card for groceries etc. The risk with credit cards is that they add up and there used to be a feeling it wasn't my money. Debit cards don't increase debt. They just drain the sum you budget for weekly expenditures. Until the next paycheque when you top it up again.

Some stores will accept a credit card only if your purchase exceeds a minimum dollar threshold.

So I guess it's really your fault for not checking the amount that the shop keeper punched in before you put in your PIN#.
Also, must have been a long time ago. Lottery tickets have a bar code that they scan and the amount shows up on the register which in turn goes directly into the hand held debit/credit card reader.

CCs have fraud protections that make sense to use them.

CCs often have point systems to gain extras or cash back.

For me - I don’t really use my debt card. I use CC for everything and then pay it off at the end of the month.

As for cash - I always have some on me or at home in case of emergency. I will also pay small businesses, tips, etc in cash for reasons already stated

I watched the video. So this guy uses a credit card to get cash advances from a bank machine if he is in Europe. Cash advances on CC charge huge interest rates from day 1. Not very smart.

Well it you're trying to assign blame yes. And fuck off. :) I tapped my card. I didn't have my accountant with me at the time. or my glasses. I guess you are the kind of person who keeps everybody waiting to count your change before you put it in your purse at the 711.
