Came across another CBC Marketplace sting operation that caught IT repair technicians at Canada Computers and Best Buy and several other well known companies that provide IT repair services not only snooping through your data, your photos, contacts, etc, but making copies of the information contained on your computer or phone.

That's just fucked up.

Criminal even. If you keep your tax returns and financial records on your computer, which a great many people do, you're setting yourself up to be robbed or identity theft. And the problem is that nothing will happen to these clowns working at these places. The companies won't do anything about it and neither will the police.

The companies should allow customers to sit in on the repairs to eliminate this kind of craziness.

Either that or you need to keep all your data on a portable hard drive with a password. Nothing on your computer.

Here is the link to the article on the CBC:

I thought they are required by law to look for illegal stuff.

If they are required by law as you say, which I don't think so - BIG BROTHER watching but get someone else to do it for us, then if you buy a used computer, and the program they use to scourer your HDD for deleted files and finds stuff from previous owner. Are you responsible?

I worked with a guy who always bought used cell phone even from friends. He would flip the cells to make the cash like automotive hobbyist used to do. 90% of the time his friends didn't reset the Cell or they erased every personal stuff. But with the undelete software technology for free, he found nude picture of them.

Yes I would empty out personal files from my PC before I took it to them. Usually I just buy a used laptop. Then I remove the old HDD from the previous laptop for personal use. Even when I take the stuff to E-transfer station I remove the HDD and scratch it.

Buy a Mac. I have not needed a single repair since I bought my Macs over 10 years ago.

May cost more when you first buy it but you are not having to upgrade every couple of years, don’t have malware problems and it just doesn’t really need repairs and if it does Apple has great repair services.

I mean I still have my original IPad 1st Gen. it works perfectly. Except apps don’t accept it anymore. But what do you expect with a computer product that is 23 years old. The original software and hardware work perfectly though.

Linux is even better. Does all the above, is more secure and stable than Windows or Mac. Plus Linux, its apps and programs are all FREE!

IMHO Linux, which I've been running as my main OS since 2008, is about as easy to pickup/learn as Mac.

Info on the various popular Linux flavors are found here: https://distrowatch.com

Apples are not particularly reliable. They have their own repair centers. Most apple products copied your stuff while you still have it at home.. Google automatically copies everything on android.

This is why I dont store anything on my computer.

Everything is stored on OneDrive on my Personal Vault and I set up 2 factor authentication for everything.

I'm not surprised.
No matter who you give your PC to for repair, you really are vulnerable to them looking at your stuff.
Browser history, saved files, cached files.
Even if you store porn on an external drive that you didn't surrender to the repair guy, you're still allowing them to access your entire PC.

If you download porn from the Internet, transfer it to an external HD which is never connected to the Internet and then delete the original porn on the computer you downloaded from the Internet.

This is actually good for escorts touring the US. You can hold booking contacts, calendar etc and then delete those off your phone while crossing the board.

Keep your personal shit on there, only surf escort stuff on private and delete that history only and keep your regular browser for all the typical surfing.

This shows customs a regular phone with regular use and yet no escorting stuff.

I have had my phone and laptop searched before and they never find anything.
