Came across another CBC Marketplace sting operation that caught IT repair technicians at Canada Computers and Best Buy and several other well known companies that provide IT repair services not only snooping through your data, your photos, contacts, etc, but making copies of the information contained on your computer or phone.
That's just fucked up.
Criminal even. If you keep your tax returns and financial records on your computer, which a great many people do, you're setting yourself up to be robbed or identity theft. And the problem is that nothing will happen to these clowns working at these places. The companies won't do anything about it and neither will the police.
The companies should allow customers to sit in on the repairs to eliminate this kind of craziness.
Either that or you need to keep all your data on a portable hard drive with a password. Nothing on your computer.
