Only 2%? That’s freaking astronomical. It’s probably higher than that too.

It’s super contagious. If 40-70% of the population gets it, that’s roughly 15 to 26 million Canadians. That’s 300,000 to 500,000 deaths at 2%.

The number of patients requiring ICU treatment is reportedly around 20% of cases. That’s 3 to 5 MILLION Canadians that may require intensive care. No country can handle that kind of volume. Many of those cases will just die at home, as is happening in China right now.

You’re comfortable with millions of Canadians dying, and the health care system being overwhelmed?

Look at China. This will get very, very bad, and our government of liberal snowflakes won’t take any necessary measures to prevent or minimize the damage coming.

On the bright side though, I imagine SP rates will come way down. Maybe a loaf of bread and a few bars of soap will do.

Smokers and people with asthma too. The worst part about this virus is the pneumonia that comes with it
Yes. Lots of Chinese men, young and old, are enthusiastic smokers. And there's lots of pollution in China, too, which adds to their poor lung health.

My concern is panic reaction fuelled by media, particularly social media . Quite a few of my Chinese friends who use Wechat, their version of Facebook , are seeing online comments about imminent food shortages in Canada , and they have begun stocking up on food supplies. Such chatter spreads like wildfire , and panic could be inevitable , well before the virus itself poses any significant risks . It never hurts to remain in tune with and aware of what’s happening on the ground . Don’t rely on mainstream media to give us a heads up

Better stock up on food and supplies before there are widespread shortages due to the blockades.

Scared no but I am very concerned. I thought the number of deaths and cases of the Corona Virus would always surpass the SARS outbreak and it has by a large number.

Concern is that the Corona Virus is highly contagious and in some of the cases of the people who have gotten the virus, there were no links to other humans previously with the virus.
The death rate is about 3% but the fact that this virus has been transmitted to people outside of the Far East to countries Iran, and Italy should be very concerning to all and again the fact that it is highly contagious.
The death toll is a lot higher for men who are 60 years old and above so those should take more precausions specially the ones with respiratory problems.
These are all important facts to know about the virus.

One of my Chinese friends commented today that she’s seeing daily empty shelves in many sections of the Chinese supermarkets in Scarborough and Markham . Those shortages could spread and spill over faster than the virus

This is exactly what will happen when Joe and Jane Average finally wake up and start panic buying. It’s happened everywhere the virus has hit. Hong Kong, Italy, etc. Proof is easy to find.

Aside from the possibly devastating effect on my investment savings, not too much concern.

Having said that, I do have a hospital appointment next week and hospitals are great places for picking up bugs.

Im not scared....yet. Hopefully dont want to be.

Mostly just concerned and how our government will handle it.

If the situation arises where it comes here and a mass outbreak were to happen, and a loved one dies, how would all the people who werent soo cautious and blew it off react?

I guess being informed is great but maybe being prepared is better?

This is assuming that everyone in Canada gets it, though, which at this time there’s absolutely no indication that we’re in danger of that happening. We’re currently at a handful of known cases, all of which are accounted for and in quarantine. We haven’t had any uncontrolled outbreaks here. It’s also not as simple as our snowflake leftie leaders won’t shut down air travel, though good job politicizing something that isn’t political. You understand that air traffic isn’t just commercial air traffic, right? A ton of stuff is imported from other countries, we wouldn’t be able to completely shut down air (and for that matter boat) traffic without completely cutting ourselves off economically. You’re scared that hoarding and shortages will be bad now? Wait until we’re not bringing any commercial goods into the country.

This is completely ridiculous. You’re all here decrying the media and people for panic buying, yet you’re also the ones spreading these silly doomsday scenarios that we’re nowhere near yet. You can’t have it both ways.
Uh no. We will know about the cases that are here now in about 3 weeks. Where have these latest cases been? Who have they had contact with? Who did they infect? Who will those people infect? We will be able to answer those questions all too soon.

A travel ban would have easily prevented the woman who flew from China and went directly to the hospital on arrival. She basically escaped and knowingly put countless others at risk.

I’m not fanning the flames of panic. I’ve already got enough food to last me for months stored in my house, so you know, when you’re busy not panicking and trying to find food when all the shelves are empty, think of me.

The government absolutely dropped the ball here, and continues to do so. You can’t “manage” an epidemic.

Death toll in Italy currently sits at just over 3%. But those deaths were all old people
That's true. I read some early stats that said that the death rates were 0 percent for ages 0 to 9, 0.2 percent for under 40. Now if you are over 70 it can be up to 8 percent and over 14 percent if you are over 80. But even those high deaths are people with pre-existing conditions such as heart or lung disease, diabetes or cancer. The only reason to close schools or cancel the Olympics is if you want to save some grandparents from younger healthy carriers. BTW men have a death rate of 2.8 percent versus 1.7 for women so far.

You notice the media hasn't been presenting any of these percentages. They don't want to lose the opportunity to creat mass hysteria among younger people!!!

So if your older get to the gym or visit your favorite SP to get your heart rate up!

Based on all 72,314 cases of COVID-19 confirmed, suspected, and asymptomatic cases in China as of February 11, a paper by the Chinese CCDC released on February 17 and published in the Chinese Journal of Epidemiology has found that the risk of death increases the older you are, as follows:

80+ years old = 14.8%
70-79 years old = 8.0%
60-69 years old = 3.6%
50-59 years old = 1.3%
40-49 years old = 0.4%
30-39 years old = 0.2%
20-29 years old = 0.2%
10-19 years old = 0.2%
0-9 years old = no fatalities

I'm 38. 0.2% is still a bit high for my liking, but it's nothing to freak out about.

That is clearly a case of age discrimination. In our enlightened times, that is unacceptable.

We're being lied to. Just ask a cop the difference between what is reported (or not reported at all) versus what really happens in incidents that get news coverage. They experience fake news daily.

The worse the situation gets, the rosier the picture Big Brother will paint for us.
