There is not a time in mainland China since the 1911 revolution when
its government was not either corrupted or oppressive or both. A
successful leader in China is one who is able to hold the ruling party and
the country together. Xi overall is no better or worse than his predecessors.

I think all this tariff stuff will eventually be sorted out, and we could be headed for a golden age over the next 10 years.

Trump could offer removal of tariffs in exchange for more strategic
investments from China. Nano and material science research
has been making steady progress in American universities. China can
inject its trade surplus into for instance commercialization of fruits of
academic research in energy storage and next generation nuclear breeder
reactors. China can also help the U.S. with building a network of high-speed
rail. If the U.S. does have as much gold bullions as it has on the book Trump
can offer 2 or 3 thousand tons of gold in exchange for cancellation
of debt owed to China. That should bolster confidence on the future
of the U.S. and attract enormous foreign investment.
Trump could steer the U.S. in the right direction without alienating
the whole world if only he ceases to be the manical bully he is.

I have done a stint in China. And have worked with Chinese programmers for many years. You need to be very careful with the Chinese as they value respect way more than power and money. JD Vance completely lost it for the US when he called them 'peasants'.
They already had no respect for Trump because he is a greedy, obnoxious bull dude. Now they won't back down after being called peasants.
Vance could improve the odds of Trump to blink
after Xi if he apologizes for his peasant remark.
