On Cross Country Check UP today at 4 PM, the theme of the show will be the recent court ruling which strikes down the bawdy house laws. For those who are not familiar with the program, they usually line up a number of informed speakers on both sides of the issue and interview them. Then they take calls from the public. In 2 hours with no commercials, it allows them to explore themes beyond the superficial level. I expect the discussion to be a good one this week. 99.1FM at 4 PM.

Thank you Melanie. She just called in and told her story. She used to work as an office manager making $35,000 a year. But it was meaningless work and she wasn't happy. So she then worked 4 years in an incall agency. She found the work meaningful. She had a good time with her clients and they left with a smile on their face. What's so wrong with that? Why do previous callers say prostitutes deserve no respect and are human tissues who are used and degraded.

I haven't heard the whole program, but the ones who are saying that probably spent the morning in church.

They forget, of course, that Jesus brought at least one prostitute into his fold.

There have been several callers who talk about human trafficking and child prostitution and use that as a reason to keep it illegal. The last caller claimed that since:

1.) the majority of prostitutes are women

2.) the majority of prostitutes begin work as 13, 14, and 15 year olds

3.) the majority of prostitutes want out of the work...

that it should be illegal. WTF?? All kinds of misconceptions out there. Especially #2. People refuse to pay for programs to keep kids in school, but they want to hire cops to go out, arrest them and throw them in jail.

I was able to listen to a bit of it, so much mis-information , miscinceptions out there. Most people lump all prostitution into drugs, pimps, street action etc.
Kudos to Melanie for sharing her story and her view .

To some people that is exactly the problem. Somebody had a good time. Having a good time is a sin. Suffering is a virtue.

IMO I believe that the judge made the right decision in striking down key parts of Canada's prostitution laws.

Reminds of a quote from The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress:

"Must be a yearning deep in human heart to stop other people from doing as they please. Rules, laws — always for other fellow. A murky part of us, something we had before we came down out of trees, and failed to shuck when we stood up. Because not one of those people said: "Please pass this so that I won't be able to do something I know I should stop." Nyet, tovarishchee, was always something they hated to see neighbors doing. Stop them "for their own good" — not because speaker claimed to be harmed by it."

Freakin' brilliant quote. I must reaquaint myself with Heinlein again. Thanks for sharing, Huron.

Human trafficking is already illegal and rightly so. There should be no tolerance for anyone that seeks to take personal freedom from another human being, especially for their own gain.

That said, I have an idea: Let's actually enforce the human trafficking laws.

There's no reason to make prostitution illegal just because some prostitutes are victims of human trafficking! It's like saying that child actors should be banned because some parents take advantage of their children and push them into the public eye for their own (the parents') benefit. In the latter case, we prosecute abusive parents without stopping responsible parents for supporting their consenting children in a career in entertainment. It should be the same in the adult world. If consenting adult women want to work as SPs, this has nothing to do with trafficking of any sort and should be left alone.

Apparently, LE takes the view that too many laws are not enough law. There are now laws on the books that make ordinary people criminals for not reporting what they think might be crimes (e.g. child abuse).

I haven't yet listened to the program, but I will tonight while doing laundry. I will comment on a few things. I'm dating a SP and my previous GF was a long time SP (11 years in the industry). She was one of those "broken" girls. My current GF followed the same path (Yeah yeah, I'm saving the damsel in distress, blah blah). This entire argument about legalizing prostitution is a step in the right direction BUT...society and the media have it alll pegged wrong

For starters, legalizing prostitution should NOT be about "more tax money".
It should be about the rights of women to protect themselves and be accepted in society as human beings with legitimate careers. The SP's need it for their own personal safety and the protections ALL workers get. Secondly, the argument it should be controlled by the government is bullshit. That's exactly what happened in The Netherlands & their sex trade (while safer) still has it's underbelly of crime and corruption. The government in the Netherlands was more interested in control and the tax money than it was in the rights of the workers. What you've got in Holland is a bunch of brothels & that is NOT the answer. The answer is having women make the decision who they want to see WITHOUT fear of retribution. I really don't give a rats ass if I piss off every MP in Eastern Canada, but too many of those places are managed by unscrupulous types who do not put the best interest of the SP in mind. It's "factory fucking" as my ex used to say. I don't care how sexually liberal you are, someone entering YOUR body is always going to be "different" than cutting hair, giving them a massage, etc.

The ONLY way to legalize this business is to give the women FULL control and have the police, government and society offer the same protections afforded to the rest of the working public. Call the receptionist at an office and tell her you want to pound her pussy on the hood of a car. You'll find yourself with a visit from the police if she chooses. An SP should too have the right too. She needs that protection because what most pooners don't understand is that there are a LOT of fucked up assholes that have no respect for SP's. I know this for a fact because I hear about it every single day of the week.

The general population is clueless about this trade, as I was too until I managed to end up dating a former SP. The stereotypes of the typical "ho" abound and the reasons are aplenty. This industry remains in the "grey area" of life so people educate themselves about it by what they read or see in Hollywood. But those stereotypes are enforced by the pooners AND...by the women themselves. I read several SP forums and I shake my head when I see SP's talking about how they "love all their clients", blah blah blah. Not saying they don't enjoy sex because some of them do. But cut the shill...it's as tiresome as the fake reviews or never ending conversations on TERB about how thick someone's cock is and how he makes every SP squeal in delight with multiple orgasms. If you can't see the reality, you can't understand WHAT the reality is, so how can you change things?

The right to buy sex should be a right of all Canadians. It's a woman's choice to sell her body. We allow companies to sell products that fuck up your body (cigarettes, fast food) yet we don't allow a person to sell their own body for sexual pleasure. And if they do, we turn a blind eye and ignore it. And for those that have fallen down..the SW's? Well they're not even human. Pickton ground up 49 women into hamburger and fed them to pigs. That got LESS media play than Jane Creba getting shot in downtown Toronto. One person has "value" the other 49 did not.

Just my 2 cents.

Definitely worth more than 2 cents.

Too bad you weren't able to catch the show, call in and share your thoughts live on air.
