Russia is trying to avoid being a victim. Ukraine is the victim of the proxy war. Two packs of Hyenas fighting over a dying beast.
In Nottyland, "being a victim" translates as "not wanting to lose face by failing at the war they thought would be a cake walk".
Not being the victim is being in a much larger war with a larger enemy. ie NATO. They are not failing .There is a lot of talk about Ukrainian resistance starting to crumble in the Donbas.

I don't think they planned to undermine NATO, but that would always be a fringe benefit. We will see what they have to give up to Erdogan to get his blessing. Croatia is not feeling too good about it either.
When Ukraine is defeated NATO will have to face the fact Ukraine lost in spite of all the aid it provided. It will also have to face the reality that it has no stomach for a direct confrontation with Russia that could end the world. So in that reality, it will have to negotiate a mutual security arrangement with Russia. This could be a great thing. Less money wasted on weapons we are afraid to use. Downsizing of militaries on all sides and moving on to better pursuits then planning how to kill each other.

Whatever, in war you destroy shit. The US tried to starve Syria but Russia sent wheat to them under naval escort, What about the 500K Iraqi children the US killed with sanctions? The main reason the world is facing a food crisis is sanctions against Russia.
NATO is the aggressor on policy, but they are a pussy in actual military confrontation. After losing to the Taliban it seems sensible they should not take on Russia. They really did not think Russia would attack, and when the did the US felt it was a great opportunity to use this to carve Russia and EU apart and take control of the EU. the worse the war gets the stronger their hold over the EU. The US is the hawk the Euros are too weak to act in their own interest.

Ukriane has lots of food. Its Zelensky and his US controllers that wanna export all the Ukranian grain, starve the people and then blame it on Russia. Sanctions are what is causing the food crisis, not the lack of willingness of Russia to export food and fertilizer.
