I wear an Oris Williams F1 chrono and I love it. 45mm, thick and heavy. Looks great with anything I wear.
That's a solid watch. I remember seeing one at Costco a few years ago. I regret not pulling the trigger on it now. Costco also sells Rolex on occasion, but usually older models.

If people buy expensive watches to show off, it's very difficult for the average person to tell how expensive the watch is unless it's full of bling with diamonds and gold covering the surface. Those expensive Rolex watches I saw for 30k+ didn't look that expensive since they had no precious metals on them, and they could easily pass for those fake Rolex watches that those Africans try to sell to you in Italy for $25.

they all tell time just the same. But I think you can get a really nice watch for about 200-300 bucks

Well I look at it this way.. Why would someone buy a $70, $80, $100,000. car?

Do we really need a 70K BMW 5 ser? Why not just buy a 25k Nissan Altima, its very reliable, cheap on gas and cost of ownership?

The reason is because we can afford some of the better things in life and want them. It gives us pleasure.

Cars are one of the worst investments on the planet but allot of people buy pricey cars knowing that the depreciation value on them suck... At least some "hi-end" watches are good investments.. My friend bought a brand new Rolex Daytona wayy back in 1989 for $6500. Last I checked in (2006) used white dial Daytona's were selling for $10,000. on ebay. They probably increased in value since then..

He also bought a used Patek Philippe in 2004 that him and I drove to Montreal to pick up. He paid $10,000. for it and now they sell for $16,000 on the used market because it is a rare and sought-after model.

I would never say to someone that spending $100k on a car, 20k on a watch, or 20k a year on sp's is a waste.. Its not for me to say what you should spend your hard earned money on. Its your money, enjoy it whiles you can. Life is short so when you get the chance to make yourself happy do it.

1. 30k Rolex is made of precious metal. Stainless steel ones are cheaper. And there is no such thing as precious metal on them since good watches don't come gold plated. It's either solid gold or not.
2. Wearing something that an average person does not even begin to understand is an additional self esteem boost for people who consider themselves above average.

The average person (unless she is a golddigger) wouldn't know the difference between a $300 or a $30,000 watch and couldn't care less.

If you had to spend $30k on a watch to have self esteem or feel above average, I feel sorry for you.

I accept that some people like to wear jewelry but for self esteem? To feel above average?

I heard some rich people don't even wear the genuine article when they go out, they wear fakes instead.

For me the best watches fall in the price range of $150--$300. Nothing above this range
could boost my self-esteem. When it comes to jewelry like diamond rings anything less
than $10,000 for my women is unacceptable--one reason why I'd rather have mistresses
than a trophy wife.

If you want to know the difference between a fake and a $33k watch, try to go on a date with an exquisite model and you'll see the DIFFERENCE !

I don't wear a watch under 1k. A watch for me should not be under 1k.

Is your notion that an "exquisite model" would only be on a date with you because of your watch???

You don't seen to be getting my point. This is not what I said. You may want to re-read the first sentence I wrote. Interpretation comes in many different ways and shapes.

The interpretation I got was that you think "exquisite models" are shallow women whose opinion of you depends on the dollar value of your watch.

I think you must have a very low opinion of yourself if you think that is the only thing such a woman would see in you.

High End watches are pieces of art.
You won't understand unless you love art.
This I agree with. Whatever makes you happy. I am riding on those who see it as an esteem thing or some magic charm to beguile "exquisite models".

In fact, following on this thought, I doubt there are very many women in their early 20's who have developed such an appreciation for watches, and those older than that who may have are probably fairly sophisticated judges of men anyway. Even the outright gold diggers look at multiple factors from clothes to cars, to the company you keep, but most especially careers.

But if you enjoy such things yourself and they make you happy, more power to you. Everyone should pursue their hobbies.
