WTF!
Kid gets suspended for flying a flag to show his support for police.
I wonder what the school would say if someone objected to the school flying the rainbow flag? I know " we have to make them feel accepted". If it hurts someone's feeling then to bad and stop being a homophobic racist.
Accept all of them or ban all of them!!

Yeah, it's complete ridiculousness, these decisions, because they're not based in logic, they're based in ideology, and so are enforced sporadically and at whim. If students want to show their support for police, let them. Police are a vital part of our society, and essential for maintaining law and order. And they're constantly being demonized right now. A little support thrown their way is a good thing, considering the majority of them aren't the demons the media makes them out to be.

My guess is that it's politically controversial and the school has a policy against controversial symbols.

I'm sure they'll let them fly the rainbow flag or the BLM flag. I agree ridiculous.

If you had actually read the article.

" Perhaps the board should explain what its policy is on support symbols and which ones are acceptable. No such policy can be found on its website, "
They should explain the policy yes but that doesn’t meant they don’t have one and were not following it. Just means they haven’t shared or explained what it is.

or they could be just making this shit up as they go along. We don’t know.

The Rainbow flag is no longer "controversial".

Can you show me any proof that the school allows anyone to fly the BLM flag?

Why would it have to be on the school's website. Maybe there was a flyer handed out to parents?

You're really reaching.
Again, in the article.

" Carson’s mom Kim said her son didn’t get any direction in writing from the school after he was asked to pen his reasoning to the principal."

If there was any policy behind the decision, this would have been the opportunity to make it known. It was not.
Occam's razor indicates that no policy was made known, because one does not exist.

Just doing a search for the incident gives some more info.
There isn't a specific policy.

Someone complained about the flag in September, so the principal told the kid to stop flying it.
There seems to have been some nonsense about writing a letter about why. (The kid claims the letter was sent to the principal and the superintendent but then he never heard anything back.)
Then last week or whenever (So a month or so later) the principal notices the kid still has the flag and tells him to take it down.
The kid says no.
The principal suspends him for "opposing authority" or whatever.

That makes this sound a LOT more like "asshole petty tyrant principal doesn't like being talked back to" that then got caught up in culture war bullshit because EVERYTHING does now.

So, if another kid wants to fly a three percenter flag or something? This is a perfectly sane restriction. Does the school want a bunch of flags flying around a parking lot full of teenage drivers😖???

So it isn't ideology based?
Really?

Why did the Principal tell the kid to stop flying the flag? Because someone complained? That is not sufficient reason. Especially if it didn't break any School policies.
Also, I highly doubt the Principal would have done the same if someone complained about a Gay Pride flag being flown on the kid's truck.
Which means this whole incident started due to the ideology of the Principal, and the Principal's desire to push these cultural beliefs over others.

The basic issue is this. The anti police faction believe that they are in the right and can't fathom that anyone would have an opposing point of view.

So of course that point of view must be cancelled.

Free speech is being threatened at every turn by leftist ideology. Which has been infecting educational domains now for decades.

Really stupid decision by the school principal.

Am I the only one who wishes Canada would stop consuming so much American media... Their tribalism - left vs right bullshit is rapidly making it's way here, and causing unecessary tension & division in this country.

I don't agree with the school's decision, but this post displays paranoia at worst and right wing hyperbole at best.

The doctor is in
There’s an easy solution for that… Sue the school/school board/superintendent etc.. That should make them see the error of their ways real quick!

I doubt it's ideology based, so much as "Holy shit! Someone's complaining about my school and I better do something" based.

Or the principal glanced at the Wiki article - like me - and decided that if something was "controversial", he better make sure it didn't happen.

And the Gay Pride flag hasn't been "controversial" for over a decade. FFS Hockey Night in Canada makes gay hockey players part of its inclusion commercial break nowadays.

This is basically "Let's find something to whine about. And let's whine twice as hard if we can argue that 'the other guys' got to fly their flag and we didn't!" This is the usual tempest in a teapot dressed up as Culture War because people are self important whiners. Kid can take the flag off the car when he goes to school and fly it on the weekends. Is that such a crushing blow to Western democracy?!

You ever have to do something in high school that probably wasn't strictly equitable, but the principal was a dick and you had to go along with it?..... Did the Western Way of Life survive anyway, even if you couldn't wear those pants or those shoes or whatever. This is the same shit.

What I just said in my post above.

There are issues with the crap that gets said in universities. My sister came up to present at a conference a couple of years back and was shocked at the nonsense about "stealing indigenous land" that was ranted at that conference. Apparently, the US is far behind us in idiocy of that type. But that's been going on for years. When I was last in school (the late 80's), the lesbian rad fem professor told us that all male-female sex was rape because something-something oppression of women. The decade before, you had to agree with the Poli Sci 101 prof that Marxism was the answer and the USSR had the right idea when it purged the kulaks. That's universities for you.

Now it's oppression of the indigenous ones and Canada's shameful history of colonialism. That too will pass and it will be something else in the 2030's.
