As opposed to your intelligent comment about more drowning happening in the summer than winter?
Or when he asked about "killer fishes."

Yes Virginia, there are such things as "killer fishes". Some of you guys need to get out of your mom's basement sometime.

None of those fish are native to Ontario though.

Schlongie was right, massive catfish only occur in southern US, not so much in Ontario. The largest catfish ever caught here was only 33lbs and thats obviously not gonna be able to drag down a kid:

Thanks for the tips. And you win. Linking a Listverse article definitely proves you're not some basement dwelling troll yourself.

I've camped, swam, fished (c and r) and paddled on the lake where this happened. I've swam with 5 of the 10 fish on that list you found as-well, including bull sharks twice in the last 3 months...

Are you suggesting this was the first ever death by musky? None of those other fish could survive in Big Trout.

Just having a bit of fun with the usuals, although I didn't mean to pick on Managee who seems to be a decent guy, unlike the other two jokers.

Seriously, one never knows what species might be introduced in our waters. Maybe one day you'll find Asian Carps, or worse, in a lake near you.

Maybe it was a giant leech originating from Darlington.......actually, half the kids failed the swimming test, but were still allowed to go on the trip. Perhaps swimming should be a part of the education they get. Take them to a pool and teach them to swim. If they still can't swim, don't take them camping at a lake.

Watched the news yesterday... Always unfortunate when the young lose their lives, but apparently this young man couldn't swim and went into the lake without a life jacket. I also could not swim when I was his age (had a traumatic near-drowning incident in childhood so I could only doggy paddle / back-kick) and I would never have thought to enter a lake or large body of water, even WITH a life-jacket.

This young boy unfortunately made a bad call and I grieve for his Dad but sincerely hope he takes a more active interest in his kid's abilities as apparently his other son can't swim either and the Dad was "somehow" unawares that his son couldn't swim (what family doesn't go swimming together at least once in a while?). Now I know some people like to stereotype us Black/ethnic folk and water, but this isn't helping... Thankfully I got over my trauma and took swimming lessons as an adult, but I will still never trust myself in a large body of water if there isn't a platform in sight (i.e. 500m or less away). I hope the family can heal and learn from this incident! :(

Out of 32 kids on the trip, 15 failed the test and 2 never took never even took the test. All were however allowed to go on the canoe trip. I suspect this isn't the first time kids were allowed to go on the trip without passing the test, except nobody has dies until now. So mush for protocols.

The father was quoted saying his son didn't know how to swim. So why the hell did he allow him to go on a canoe trip. Seriously?

Everyone's lawyered up so I'm sure a lawsuit will follow. Payday for the parents to follow!

Depends. I'm assuming consent forms were signed? And did parents lie about swimming capabilities?

This a such a failure. I don't even know when to begin thrashing.

lol you *think*?
We all know this is a jackpot rags to riches story
Doubt there will be a lawsuit. The board has already admitted culpability and they will pay out without the need for a lawsuit being filed. I'll assume the teachers will be fired and maybe even face criminal charges.

And yes, as much as the dad should have been more involved in the decision making but the school took on legal liability. The only bright side from the article is the board doesn't seem to be over-reactionary and canceling all trips.

Mostly agree.

Except,...teachers getting fired,...surely you jest.

And just because the board admitted they fucked up again,...doesn't mean a lawyer won't want a piece of the action.

There's no way 2 adults can watch 30 kids 24/7 on these outings.

If they had restricted the outing to only 15 instead of 30 kids, imagine the complaints from those left out.

anywhere i want;)
Actually they can.... Most amount of supervisors on a trip is 2-4 with groups of 30-60 kids. In my humble opinion - the school is to blame.. Anyone who failed that swimming test should not have been allowed to go on the trip. As for the lawsuit - if it was my mom ; she would sue in a heartbeat. Those teachers and parent supervisors and responsible 100% for those kids and under their watch one drowned and died... You don't think they would have noticed earlier if a student was missing and not at night fall? Obviously they did not have a proper system in place to protect those kids and make sure they were safe... sorry but the school and the board is 100% to blame. again just my opinion.

Did not read this whole thread, so pardon me if I'm repeating something that's already been posted.

This situation was very sad when the drowning happened.
Unfortunately, with the new discoveries on how the preparations were so poorly done, it's even sadder than before, if that's at all possible.

I think some heads will roll, and deservedly so.

These were not little children, they were teenagers. Teenagers will sometimes sneak out and do crazy things. It is not the fault of the teachers. It is teenagers occasionally paying the price for being wreckless. The kid knew he couldn't swim, but he snuck out at night. You can't handcuff them to the bedpost.

Since the two teachers, have lawyered up. They are not talking to either the school board or the other investigators. One of the teachers actually brought his family along on the trip - semi vacation time. I expect the number of students had to be at a certain level, or no trip. We will probably find out in time, they just added anyone who would go to make it happen. Two teachers aborted the safety rules, and even with parent supervisors, you cannot watch all of them 24/7. The student in question, knew he could not swim, yet decided to, without a life jacket on. Part of this issue is also his fault. Even the parents hold some fault, in letting their two non swimming sons, go on a canoe trip. As far as I can see, each area have problems, that cannot be blamed, on just one area.

My experience is that you would have more. 4 supervisors, with group of 30. Regardless of the type of trip. And that was even with youngers one then this. Even to the point the more interesting the trip was, the more the parents wanted to sign up for it.
