I'm currently reading The Dawn Watch by Maya Jasanoff. It's about Joseph Conrad's time spent in the British Navy. An engrossing read, I haven't gotten to his trip up the Congo river to Kisangani - the voyage that inspired Heart of Darkness.
Anthony Bourdain recently made that journey in reverse, traveling overland to Kisangani from Tanzania. I have never seen him suffer so much!

Robert Graves survived WW I and went on to become a foremost historical novelist. I Claudius is the first book on the Julian Emperors, it ends at the death of Caligula. Claudius The God deals with his reign as Emperor. Both great reads, also look for Count Belisarius.
The last Vonnegut book I read was Galapagos, bizarre and whimsical at the same time. His last public appearance was during the 2004 Presidential Election. He despaired that both candidates pitched themselves as War Presidents.

I read a lot, always have and mostly stick to historical fiction. I get my books from the library and tend to go with novels that won some kind of literary award. IMO there's a lot of fluff on the bestseller list(s) so I usually avoid those.
